: Is this normal?
Turbo6 01-20-2009, 07:40 AM This is only my second post so forgive my ignorance. I have had many turbocharged cars, none oem though. This blower setup is new to me. I drive a long way to work, all freeway cruising. It seems like just a tap of the gas and the boost gauge climbs to 3-5psi. I knew blowers wound up fast but is that normal for the stock setup? I liked my old turbo cars because they were just a tad laggy so you didnt murder your gas milage from light accelleration. Something tells me the government 27mpg freeway is way more than Im gonna get but I could be wrong. I havent inspected the pulley yet to see what it is exactly but my guess is its all oem. It goes have the G85 code so Im guessing that just means it has the LSD. Soooo anyway is stock boost ~10psi and do all blowers spin up this fast? Thanks!
jrzdude 01-20-2009, 08:46 AM Yes, it is completely normal to have instant boost. The blower, as you probably know, runs off the pulley, so the SC is always spinning. As soon as you touch the throttle, it lets the boost in instantly to the intake. Just doing that will allow 4-5 psi instantly, and then the higher the rpm, the higher the boost.
Depending on your elevation, you should get 10-12 psi boost on a stock setup
Turbo6 01-20-2009, 09:08 AM My elevation is somewhere around 1100 ft above sea level. I didnt beat on it too bad yet but from a brief spurt I saw around 10.5 psi on the gauge in 2nd...which was just spinning. The dealer filled up the tank for me so Im going to guess it was 87 since they are cheap. I wonder how much the ECU retards timing with regular gas. I'll have to try 93 next time and see the difference.
jrzdude 01-20-2009, 09:37 AM Yah, im around 2000 ft and the highest ive seen was 11 psi. I dont think the gas would affect the psi too much because it runs off the engine rpm. Now as far as power, then yes, the octane of gas is a big factor.
WICKED 01-20-2009, 01:35 PM You have a s/c not a turbo.
That being said, you're always going to making boost. That doesnt mean that your MPGs are automatically going to drop. 3-4 psi isnt very much boost at all and if you're mad about averaging 27 mpg, you shoulda bought an LS.

On the highway, I've gotten anywhere from 32 to 38 mpg. So you should be well over 27. I see 27 driving around town

I know I have a supercharger, Im not clueless. And apparently you've never tuned a fuel table. Going from atmospheric to 3psi the AFR requirements are much richer than at stoich. Not arguing here but I wasn't necessarily buying this for fuel economy. Just stating with a turbo it's easier to attain better mpg due to the little bit of lag while cruising around town. But as small as the turbo is on the 08-09 SS its probably just as bad as the blower in terms of instant boost. I like my car regardless! :D
WICKED 01-20-2009, 02:29 PM You can buy an evo, put in a big ass turbo and have lag if you're into that kinda stuff.
ShortStack 01-20-2009, 02:50 PM Actually, turbo6, you go richer, but not by that much...
I get 25 or 26 city, and 33 highway... your not losing enough mpgs to notice.
mikes_red_ss 01-20-2009, 07:41 PM i get bad MPG on my SS/SC but you know all the aftermarkets parts on it is worth it.. well plus if i get my foot off the gas lol
Redbalt24 01-21-2009, 01:56 PM The G85 is the limited slip pkg. When I had mine dyno it measured around 13 psi before the Stage 2, I was surprised. My friend had his done the same day and it was around the same psi. As for mpg I have a Stage 2 now and still see around 26 to 33 mpg just depends on how i drive..
Turbo6 01-21-2009, 04:29 PM I just filled up tonight for the first time. So I will get a true gauge on what the mpg will be for this car. I drive like 95% freeway thru the week so that wont hurt my average. These things have small gas tanks though, what sucks is I will have to refill more than once a week most likely since I commute so far. My old taurus had a 16gal tank so I got away with just once a week but 13 gallons wont get me very far heh.

What were your numbers before and after the stage 2? I'm getting ready to slap it on here in a couple weeks and was curious to the ACTUAL difference in numbers

yah, if your doing mostly highway, you will get almost 400 miles to the tank. I thought they were 12 gallon tanks?
Turbo6 01-21-2009, 07:22 PM Hmmm I thought I read they were 13.3 gal, maybe Im the moron. Afterall Im as big of a newb to cobalts as there is....which is why Im here bugging you fine people! :D
jrzdude 01-22-2009, 01:51 PM yah ive gotten it down to almost fumes, and still havent gone over 12 gallons when filling it up
Turbo6 01-22-2009, 02:19 PM Well that makes sense because last night my light was on and it only took 11.4 gal. So I really was almost out of gas haha. SPLENDID!
WICKED 01-27-2009, 01:27 PM i put 13.1 gals in my car a few weeks back. Definately not doing that again. Im sure my fuel pump hates me.
