I like the car! It all depends on what you want it to sound like. Go on youtube and watch some of the different videos of people's exhaust.

best sound for the least money is having your muffler replaced with a straight pipe in my opinion. Hahn racecraft and a few other companies make good exhaust but they're a little quiet and about $600. Cutting your muffler off cost about $60.

I have done this on many of my cars, I like the mufflerless sound, and its rather inexpensive...

I deleted my muffler on Saturday.. it sounds almost the same as that lol and it cost me a case of beer :P It's definately louder, but it's not at all ultra loud like you'd think.. it's kinda like an SRT-4 with less displacement and more growl.. if you've ever heard one of those. You can search youtube for a muffler delete as well.. that's what made me decide to go the cheap route ;) Only thing is.. mine's an 09 with 2.5" exhaust.. not sure what the supercharged versions were :s

ok thank you ;) ill be sure to look at the video on youtube cuz i could def go for the cheap route lol ha ha but ill see what it sounds like thank you for your input :) what color is your cobalt?

i have an ls and i just cut my muffler off. its not that loud but then again i dont have a lot of power. i think im just gonna run open pipes no cat. youll probably get more sound that way maybe some power not so sure.

I just did a muffler delete along with debadging this weekend. Debadging looks nice! I'd recommend it to anyone. As far as the muffler delete...sounds great! Sounds better than my friends 08 SS/TC and he has a hahn cat-back that he spent 600 on. I spent 2 hours of my day and mine sounds much better. Needless to say he's PISSED! He's returning his exhaust back to the company and following the delete idea. Sounds really really good...in my opinion.

Mine's a sport red tintcoat, looks almost the same as your car actually cept with the 09 rims.

muffler delete, although it's a turbo'd one and yours is supercharged; I cant see there being much of a difference imo.

go w/ the GM perfromance exhaust. i was looking for the same thing then when i was driving to work one morning and got behind another SS w/ the perf. ex. it sounded REALLY nice so thats what i went with and i get compliments all the time and a lot of looks. Only gets real loud when u really push the car, otherwise it has a great hum to it.

Not trying to argue, but why is it that you believe the GMPP not to be worth the price of admission?

skoal*boy
06-09-2009, 05:30 AM
I dont feel that its worth the money, I understand that its a GMPP and thats good, but IMO i dont think it sounds as good and it doesnt give you as much power gain as some of the other aftermarket exhaust. When GM makes stuff for there cars there not going to make them to where it unlockes all the hp, and i understand that an exhaust isnt going to make tons of hp but aftermarket vendors are going to make it to where you get the most out of the system.

I think that most people buy this system for there warranty

But understand that this is IMO. If iam wrong then someone correct me.

hey boys so im reading all your posts and im wondering is the GMPP the only exhaust i can get that wont void my warrenty and if not which ones wont?

Technically "yes." Around here if they can't prove the part you purchased caused the problem then they typically fix it. With GM in the dumps I'm sure this will change though. You are a female though, that always has it's advantages in these situations (perverted old mechanics you know!!). But to be perfectly safe I'd stick with GMPP

And how could GM prove that an aftermarket muffler had any negative impact on the warrented parts(ie drivetrain, engine)? Putting on a better muffler will only help the affected components run better. But Im sure GM would try.

I put on a Magnaflow Universal Muffler, with a 4 inch long stainless steel tip(so it looks good too) and it really sounds great. Not too much noise, but some nice bite when you step on it. A real low tone that makes it sound smooth.

The muffler cost $130 and the tip cost $30. I have a mechanic friend who installs mufflers by trade, and had him install it for $50. For $210, it was well worth it. Plus it should boost horsepower by 5-15%, and I did notice a difference in jump.

If you wanted I could put a youtube clip up, so you could hear it. Nice car, by the way. :D

^^^^ Good point^^^^^^
I dont think that an exhaust will mess anything up, unless you make it to where you dont have the back-pressure the motor needs

U8_mY_g00ch
06-16-2009, 10:28 AM
Oh, don't bring up back-pressure on this site! lol. I had this arguement with some guy on here about that. He was trying to tell me that zero back-pressure is what our engine needs.

skoal*boy
06-17-2009, 10:20 AM
LOL if your car didnt need it whats the point of an exhaust? or a performance exhaust? Move air??

Chevygirl07
06-17-2009, 03:54 PM
i definatly agree eventually if you have zero back pressure then its going to mess up the only thing i know that doesnt need back pressure is diesel and i know that for a fact cuz my boyfriend has a 2000 7.3 powerstroke diesel and his is straight piped :)

skoal*boy
06-17-2009, 06:59 PM
well even turbos dont need alot of back pressure, unlike superchargers. But turbos still need it

Knightwolf
06-17-2009, 09:20 PM
A hi-flow 3" cat should be enough for backpressure, should it not? Askin cuz I'm considering a full exhaust.. along with a few other goodies :P

skoal*boy
06-18-2009, 05:46 AM
Yea 3" is fine. thats what i have.

U8_mY_g00ch
06-18-2009, 08:37 AM
Yah, just a high-flow cat would be sufficient. Thats what I'm doin. Debating whether or not to put a muffler up there. Guess I'll just see how it sounds with and without 1

I don't see deleting the muffler as ghetto at all, as to how it sounds, I don't know till I hear one.

The Dodge SRT-4 Neon didn't even come with mufflers from the factory, I guess the Dodge Engineers figured it was right, for some reason. Eliminating the mufflers on my twin turbo GTO caused the turbos to spool faster.

It is a low cost and nice sounding mod IMO. But it isn't for everybody.

my friend cut the muffler off his 540 and claims to have lost hp?
i didnt do it cause of that reason lol

RedSStreak
10-02-2009, 02:52 PM
On BMW's, the stock exhaust already has close to perfect backpressure for the vehicle so when you cut it off, you lose horsepower.

And depending on where he cut it off, he could have lost torque but gained hp or vice versa.

That is why the catback exhausts for the BMW's are so damn expensive due to they make them with the perfect back pressure so you gain hp not lose it.

Since we are on the topic of exhaust, I wanted to say that unfortunately, my cat went to shit on Monday. When I accelerate, shift from 1st to 2nd, the exhaust hits the frame of the car and at a light, it rattles uncontrollably! I took it to the dealer and they said its covered for 7 years, 70k miles powertrain warranty. Its a bummer because its not hurting anything but it pisses me right off!

Anyone else have this problem?? Because I don't see HOW it went bad.... The flange piece where it bolts to the headers has a spring loaded 'mechanism' before the actual catalytic chamber and that part is leaking exhaust when I accelerate. Also, there seems to be something metallic bouncing inside the catalytic chamber. I raise it up on a car rack and pry the spring loaded 'mechanism' together when the car is running and the noise stops completely. That is why I know the cat is bad.

Must be from all that road racing I do?? Dammit....

How about a cat and muffler delete? I have a 07 cobalt ss. It is sunburst orange with black stripes. I have the airbox mod, zzperformance pcm, iridium plugs, and a bypassed cat. It runs real well. It sounds good cruizing, but is real raspy up high (4000-7000). Think it may be the muffler. I just dont want to hurt performance. The car is impressive. My buddy has a 07 cobalt ss with gm stage 2, 2.9pulley, a header, gmpp exhaust, air box mod. He went 13.7 @ 106 @ us41 in morroco,in. I raced him on the highway from 2nd gear to 4th and got him by a bumper.
