Hey guys, I have had my SS for about a month now, and was rather dissapointed that I was not able to find an intake for it.... With that said, I made my own. This can be easily done, and that it was very effective. The mass air flow senser, is located in a very poor place, right before the filter..... This is the answer, buy a K&N or whatever brand cone air filter, mine happened to be K&N as I took it off my Cavalier. Remove the panel covering the airbox under the drivers side fender, no need to remove the wheel, there are 4 screws. Take the airbox cover off, again 4 screws, the old filter just kinda hangs out in there, but if you look up, you will see a round tube like thing that the filter slides over. You will also see the senser, take the K&N and do a test fit, the filter should slide right inside this whole, however it is a little loose. I took 3M double sided tape, wrapped it twice around, and stuck it in. This provides an airtight seal, as well as holding the filter in place. I then replaced the airbox cover....... Drilled bigger holes in it, and it made a little difference, but the cover eliminates most of that wonderful sucking sound we all are looking to achieve. So.... back to the drawing board, haha, nahh, don't even bother putting the stupid restrictive cover back on, leave it off, and replace the bottom cover under the fender, I drilled five 1/4 inch holes in that piece right under the filter. All I have to say is wow, that thing whines, and it for sure makes a big difference in the power. So, for around 50 bucks, you can have an intake which is very decent, considering all the new ones will be is the same thing, just the plastic pipes may be a little bigger. I am also looking to make a ram air, this would be very very easy to do, as all the under plastics are very easy to cut. Go down to pep boys, get some of the flexible intake tubing they have there, its around 15 bucks I think, then pick up a velocity stack, around 15 bucks at pep boys, grab some clamps, and also get a filter that has a plastic or ruber in some cases fitting on the end, not sure on the manufacturer, but I have seen them. My theory, and as soon as I have the money and time to run to Syracuse and get the stuff is that you can run the tubing through the plastics, under the radiator, and then right into the front grill area with minimal effort, I also contemplated how sick it would be to remove the fog light from that side and just use that hole, nothing a rubber grommet and some epoxy couldnt make feesible. Any way, I am going to get a grill done for the front area, and I am going to mount the velocity stack behind it, I don't know how much power it would give you for sure, but having the air from outside rammed into the intake, I think would make a big difference, if anyone tries this let me know what you think. I have been around cars my whole life, as my grandfather owns a chevy dealership... haha, I will get some pics up of my Blue SS soon, Full underglow, interior neons, Alpine and JL Soundsystem, with the pioneer factory sub integrated into it. Couldn't let it go to waste after I took it out, it is a good sub, DVC and all, just under powered, it sounds good now though, I have 2 type R 12's in addition to that!!! Any way, enjoy this easy to do mod, I sure am, will also post some victory's as soon as I go somewhere where people want to play. Looking to race an 05 GTO this week, its an automatic, however it is still pushing 400 HP..... Should be interesting, win or lose, it will be fun. Talk to you soon, Tommy ;)

congrads you have just created the "barry intake mod" well basically, for the cobalt with a few differences, we just drill a hole in the intake pipe and put the maf there, and than put in aftermarket filter in the inside of the factory tube. it works great, and gotta love the wine :D

Ouch! MAF!
Why is it the MAF cars are sooooo damn easy to reflash the ECU and us DCx owners get lucky by NOT having a MAF but UNLUCKY by having an encrypted PCM we can't crack. Wah!

:D
True, true. Depends on how LOW the filter is placed. On the SRT-4 it can be placed REALLY low (too low, really) so that a 4-5 inch deep puddle can hit it. I figure if it's way up in the fender somewhere it shouldn't be a problem.
Then again, can someone post some good pics of a fabbed intake for the CSS/SC?
