: Redline Ion Gets The Shaft!

Well, it seems to me (after some research) that most companies aren't even looking to develop performance parts for the Ion Red Line.

Of course, some of the Cobalt SS parts will be transferrable, however, others won't due to the longer wheelbase of the Ion Red Line.

I observed an e-mail from RK Sport, saying that 5,000 units (Red Line #'s) isn't enough to warrant them even taking a look at the car.

That's too bad, I was considering the car before but now, Cobalt SS it is :D

What parts would that interfere with? Besides, the wheelbase is the exact same, it's the same frame, chassis, and suspension. The Redline has a 103.5" wheelbase to the Cobalt's 103.3" wheelbase. .2" isn't a difference that is going to bother anything. There are plenty of people that are going to make parts for the car, there was alot more in Barry's email than just that statement. Not to mention I've never bought anything from RKsport to begin with. Anything that fits on one, will fit on the other.

Anything that fits on one, will fit on the other.

If the same applies to the RSX-S and the 2006 Civic Si, then Cobalt SS owners might be shocked to see a brand new Civic outrun and outhandle them. But then I don't know if it'll have the same frame/chassis but the engine and tranny will be the same (except the Civic gets a LSD whereas the RSX-S does not).

I doubt the Civic or the RSX will outruon the Cobalt!
They have similar HP numbers but Hondas dont even know what torque is!
They should be on the Cobalt/RL's tails but I highly doubt they will beat a Cobalt. I saw an AEM Acura RSX in a mag once (Motor Trend: Nov. 2004 to be specific) w/ several things done to it: intake, pulleys, plugs, an engine management system, a cat-back exhaust, and what they call a relatively small "squeeze" of NITROUS! Don't let me lose you: without the nitrous they said it would run a 14.83 in the 1/4, now I know thats back when the factory output was 200hp but w/ all the mods (excluding nitrous) thats at least 215-220hp. And all they could pull was a 14.83, thats kind of pathetic compared to a car that probably outweighs it and has probably 10-15 less horsepower (the Cobalt) running a mid to high 14 second run. ( I'm hearing 14.5's -14.7's). And with that "small" squeeze they could only muster a 13.93.

STOCK RSX-S's and Civic's will NOT beat Cobalts unless they discover torque. (http://motortrend.com/features/performance/112_0302_pt/)

No RSX-S or Civic Si (or Type-R if it comes) in stock form will be beating any Cobalt SS given that they both have decent drivers!! Cause I KNOW that AEM RSX has more hp than the now "210hp rated RSX-S's" even without the spray and I KNOW it would outrun an 05 RSX-S, and I also KNOW that it wouldn't outrun an 05 Cobalt SS unless it used the spray. Nough said.

sorry ^ "outrun"

P.S. DEFINITELY not hatin on Hondas. I have much respect for them cause they are very fast for NA cars. Only thing Im saying is HP rating to HP rating the Chevy's have the lower time slips, wether its the LSD or the torque that helps beat them out in the 1/4, I don't know but I do know the new Chevy is faster none the less.

P.S.S. sorry about so many repeated replies but the 0-60s are better too.
Cobalt brochure is stating a 6.1 sec. 0-60 and the MODIFIED RSX could only hit a 6.45 sec. 0-60.

Well, I definitely agree that a stock RSX-S and the 2006 Civic Si will not outrun the Cobalt SS/SC. But to say that with the support currently out there for that engine that a decently modded RSX-S/2006+ Civic Si won't beat a Cobalt SS/SC, I'll have to disagree.

But that AEM Acura RSX-S isn't that impressive either. Since it's AEM, they probably would not use the far superior Hondata K-Pro as AEM has their own ECU replacement. You have to realize AEM is going to be biased/limited to what parts they're putting on their car. It is advertisement afterall.

From what I can see, there's no mention of other 3rd party cams of any sort. The 2002+ Integra Type R comes with better cams and has 220 hp naturally aspirated. It's parts are easily interchangable with the RSX-S and has been done. There are even more aggressive cams out there for example Toda or Crowers.

As well, that RSX-S has been surpassed by so many on ClubRSX. I am not one of them... :( The 1/4 mile times in that are also pretty sad. I've seen a lot of stock RSXes in the mid 14s.

I also have not yet brought into the equation forced induction. There are a lot of turbos/superchargers out there as well as FI cams. The other cams out there weren't suitable for FI because of excessive overlap.

Anyway, I'm just saying there's ALREADY a lot more aftermarket support out there for the RSX-S/2006+ Civic Si so I wouldn't expect someone's new Cobalt SS/SC to walk over any RSX-S he sees. A lot of them don't stay stock. The aftermarket might have a bit of catching up to do for the Cobalt. I say this because this thread's title mentions that the Ion Redline doesn't have a lot of support now and it's supposed to use the same engine (not saying there won't be a flood of people making stuff for it in the near future).

Also about the LSD, the 2006+ Civic Si should have one as well so it should have faster times than the RSX-S. Assuming the Civic Si uses the same engine mounts inserts as the RSX, you could shave off a bit more time with that too (no more wheel hop).

Granted, the Hondas do have ALOT more aftermarket following and they ARE VERY FAST NA cars!!!!! But they seriously need to up their torque!!! The LSD's should help too. Don't get me wrong I like Honda's!!!! My buddy Brandon has a Civic DX with a Type-R motor swap...BAD!!!!! Just like Chevy's best!

the ion is just ugly IMO... I mean they will probably be a little cheaper than the Cobalt, but I'll be happy to pay the extra $... Its like the Trans Am/Camaro things... Same 2 cars, the Trans Ams were higher and looked better in my opinion...

Cobizzle.. you really need to learn about the EDIT button..

you'll see it on all of your posts...

its annoying to see 4 post in a row, each saying "p.s.:...." .. use the edit button, ok?!

and dont say "honda doesnt know what torque is!!".. i wont even get into that.. just dont make comments like that, seriously, its dumb*shrugs*

why do you hate the redline?! the redline and cobalt are both bad ass cars that will be owning the streets after our mods...

Yeah man I found the edit button, just after I did all that..wasn't payin attention.

But seriously man, a 2.0L makin 210hp and what ONLY 140 ft/lbs. I mean thats ALRIGHT but they NEED more torque. Honestly, I think the Cobalt SS's and Redline's should've debuted with more torque. Look how succesful the SRT-4 has been. Don't get me wrong, like I said I like Hondas. I LOVE my buddies Type-R swapped Civic. He definitely has one of the baddest cars around here and probably THE baddest sport compact. Im just kinda wishin they would up their torque output. But I am VERY impressed with their NA hp numbers on a lil 2.0L!!

ThatChevyGuy
03-17-2005, 02:44 PM
aren't they rated at 200lbs. of torque? I believe so, that is probably underrated as well...

Hey stop bashing the redline. The redline is exactly the same as the SS. I own 2004 Redline (electric blue) and love it. I got it because I did not want to wait for the SS not only that I got mine for $17500. 0% APR for 6 years. Lets see how much you pay for your SS if you ever get one. Im 23 with a wife and kid and I am a crewchief in the UNITED STATES AIR FORCE. The 4 doors come in handy. Our cars take exactly the same parts. In 1 month Psi FI Motors will be selling there 18PSI Redline/SS performance upgrade for $700 to $800.

I for one haven't been bashin any RL's Ive been sayin exactly what you just said about em bein the same car and all the whole time. I actually love the RL, although I am opting to go with the SS...have been tryin to talk my girlfriend into gettin a RL though, he he, she keeps sayin "but Im not good at drivin a stick yet" and Im like so get one and practice, wink wink!!! ;)

I've decided that once the SS drops if its ridiculously priced, I'm going to stop by the Saturn dealer as well... I like the look of the SS a lot more, but i'm not going to pay $7k more for the same damn car... Its kind of like the Trans Am, no way I would have bought one new when i could have been in a SS Camaro for the same price as a normal Trans Am, I would have just bought a Z28 myself but the concept applies here... Now if the Cobalts are $20K(after markup wears off) and the Redline is $18k, then I'll just suck up the difference and go with the bow tie...

Yes, they are the same car besides interior/exterior styling. Even though the big spoiler looks exactly like the RL's (IMO) and I prefer the quad doors and no door dings! But I do LOVE the rear styling of the SS much more than the RL.

I had no clue how to drive a stick and learned on my RL. Yes I bought a car that I couldn't drive but my husband taught me and now I love it. Driving an automatic is mindless driving...and boring. And with as many problems I've had with auto tranny's, I welcomed the change to a manual.

Just tell your gf shes not gonna get any better until she practices! And by practicing I mean tell her to get the RL. hahaha :D

Yeah I wish LOL!!
And yes I also think the wings resemble each other ALOT!!!
Never seen an SS up close, have seen a RL though.
Heck if you get em side by side then they might BE the exact same wing.
And yes I also agree with lovin the 4 doors. We're not married yet or anything but that would help us in the future when we do get married and have kids.

Yes , but I heard because of the four doors after you put some miles on it, it becomes a rattle trap.

No rattles yet...

Had about 17,000 on my 2004 Quadcoupe 3 with no rattles and currently have 3000 on my RL with no rattles. Guess only time will tell.

Didn't think you were bashing at all. :) This is the first brand of car(saturn) that I have been able to buy brand new. It was either this or a Kia...and there is NO WAY I was buying one of those!!!!

If I ever buy a foreign car it will be European and have the letters BMW somewhere... :D

You, sir, are nuts. But then, you did say it was only your opinion. The Cobalt styling is a non effort rip-off of a Honda front end that looks like it was mated to an Impala rear. Oh.... that's so.......... HOTT!  A cheesy attempt to lure Honda boys to a chevy vehicle. THEY HAVE NO SHAME:( (GM, that is)

You are however correct in your opinion that the Trans AM was the better lookin of the 2 cars (Camaro/firebird) It only cost more because of Pontiac being one notch higher on the GM totem pole

Cadillac
Buick
OLDS (gone but not forgotten)
[[Saturn]] recent addition to the pole
Pontiac
Chevrolet

Also, early on GM realized that some morons out there would buy a truck from them if it wasn't called a Chevy. You know, the guy that "the only GM car I would buy is a Buick! (insert olds, pontiac, Caddy), I'd NEVER buy a Chevrolet". So they made a Chevy truck a GMC truck. This also allowed an OLDs, Cadillac, Pontiac dealer to sell a truck and not be in conflict of a franchise agreement.

So, now the newest entry to the same sh!+ with a different name game is the ION Red Line/Cobalt SS. Same drivetrain, suspension, racing seat option, yada, yada. Different bodies!!

They are the same and as different as the camaro and firebird are.
