Hey guys. I like your site. I hope i put this in the right spot. I guess stoplight racing is considered road racing. I have a few questions to ask you, but first a brief introduction.

My name is Kevin "Skip" Engle and I work in an office building as an intern. Right now, I work in the mail room. I sift through envelope upon envelope, hopingone will be for me. I am not that lucky. Anyways, I drive a 2003 Acura RSX Type S six speed. I am getting used to the clutch, as my last car was as automatic as it gets.

Now, to the questions. My friend Jerry has a Chevy Cavalier now, but has also preordered a Cobalt SS. He always challenges me to a street race. I never agree, I don't like speeding tickets. I am confident I can take his Cavalier, although it is some high performance model. I am not a big car buff, I am fairly young a naieve when it comes to cars. Right now, the only "mods" I have are a "trick" exhaust that my friend sold me and my "wicked fresh" intaker.

When he gets his new car, he said we are going to race. Should I be afraid or should I ignore his idle threats? Are these cars really that good?

Thanks in advance,
-Skip

the SS is definately a car to be respected... soon enough... 1/4mile times are in the low to mid 14's stock...

id say mod your ~S and gaurantee the win :)

are you planning on street racing or at the track?... search for an ecu upgrade on the web also...hondata is a popular one, idk roo much about rsx's, but mainly the simple "beginningmodlist"

oh yeah, first get headers now that you got intake and exhaust!!!!!

Yeah ive heard great stuff about Hondata.

Oh and after you get you car exhalin good w/ the header and exhaust, get it inhalin better by gettin a bigger throttle body and a ported intake manifold!

Not sayin its gonna be cheap, but after all o that, it'll scoot somethin fierce! ;)

Hey welcome to the site but if you get the headers for your type S you should put up a good fight because that might bring you to level playing grounds but the only thing i would worry about it the tourque that the SS has that might let the SS bet you. Well good luck.

Where do I get headers and what do they do.

My friend Tim told me how the intaker and exhaust works. The intaker is like a giant vacuum that sucks air in and the exhaust is like a big leaf blower. He said the intaker gives me 25 housepower and the exhaust gives me 15 housepower. The dealership said I already have 200 housepower. So total I have 240 housepower.

How many does the Cobalt have.

I'm sorry I'm not hip to the new terminology, as I said before, I am new to "mods" and am willing to learn. My buddy Tim called it an intaker and I assumed it was the correct phrase. Tim has a "wicked phat" Honda. Is wicked phat the right adjective?

Whre could I get a Hondata. I called AutoZone and they said I'd need to order it from somewhere else. Do any of you guys have Hondatas? What should I expect from it?

A stock RSX-S is faster than a stock Z24 Cavalier. But seeing as how you're still getting used to the clutch, it'll be a drivers race and I believe the more experienced Cavalier owner will beat you. If you are looking into RSX mods, this is not the place to look (try Club RSX (http://www.clubrsx.com/)). Personally, I go for "control" mods for improved handling and predictability before power (I personally started with tires first, motor mounts and suspension first). But am I right in assuming this will be a straight line race? If so, you may not need any mods.

But first thing you'll need to know is how to launch the car. How new/used are your stock tires (BTW, the stock all-season Michelin's suck)? The RSX-S also has traction problems. You can correct that with $30 motor mount inserts (see Energy Suspension (http://www.energysuspension.com/) Motor Mounts) and performance summer tires. Without the motor mounts or an engine dampner, you may end up with crazy wheel hop (basically your engine rocking back and forth when the tires repeatedly grip and slip) when trying to launch at too high of a rev. That is not good for the car and will wreck your soft factory mounts.

If you want to go the "power" route, you can get an intake/header/exhaust (usually abbreviated I/H/E). To really open that up, Hondata (http://www.hondata.com/)'s reflash/K-Pro is suggested. If you aren't great with the car, the extra power will be wasted anyhow.

All I really have to say is get used to the car first before racing. Practice your launches and shifting. You'll need to be fast at both. Know your car's limits and it quirks. I don't want to see you flying into a wall or something (forgot to mention torque steer). Don't jeopardize anyone. If you intend on doing this on the street, shut down when you see traffic.

Wow, I'm surprised how many RSX owners are on this board...

I dont know y u would bash your own car like that dude! Acura's r not that bad at least their not hondas

Um, yeah they are... But he knows that and is just trying to start something.

Acura is the upscale version of Honda in the US, and only the US. Everywhere else, the RSX is the Honda Integra.

Yes, it is a Japanese company... Honda...What? Did you not note the amazing similarity to Honda? Or the fact that they all use the same damn engines, transmissions, and most of the other junk? Put down the Playstation controller, turn off GranTurismo, and do some research.

As far as the guy with the RSX, if you race his Cobalt SS and your car is mainly stock, I would imagine it gonna be a real close race. REAL close. I've been looking for an RSX to run, but I can't find any RSX-S's to go after, the few I have seen are driven by middle age women so far. Not intended as an insult, just what I've seen. The only real cars that I've even kinda had a good, semi-real race with is an Impreza and an Infinity FX45. The Impreza was not a line up and race, it was more of a catch me if ya can through traffic, so his AWD was no help to him. He was so impressed that he made me tell him about the car for 5 min at a stoplight real nice guy in his mid 30's or so and incredibly nice, said he'd never had to 'try and catch a Saturn before'. He said that he saw me pull on him from the previous light and was gonna shoot around me when I took off the second time. I'm sure someone will now list all the reasons why the Impreza would win IF.... but that's how it went down. I smoked the Infinity like it was standing still. Might have been the smaller engine, I never saw the back of it, just pulled up next to me at the light.

No, they're two seperate cars and engines.

I believe the Type-R has 220bhp as opposed to the Type-S' 205.

One of my friends ran a high 13 at 95 in his 5th gen hatch with a GSR swap and i/e. They have tons of potential.

If I didn't have to pay for school next year, I'd build up a 5th gen Civic and have it be a 12 second beast.

Potential they have. To bad hardly any of it comes this side of the big pond. All we really have is the Si and the type S. Well and the S2000 and NSX but thats a different class of car.
We need the Civic Type R and the Integ Type R!That would be much better competition.
Other than that motor swaps is all we got.

The CTR isn't that great and we did have an ITR, which also wasn't that great. The Si and GSR are both pretty close to the CTR and ITR.
