What is actually happening? Are the wheels hopping up and down, back and forth? Or is the engine, and hence the trans etc doing the moving.
My SS does it even in the rain, and it's annoying. I can see where this would be a real bitch at the drags.

And....what is the cure? Springs? Engine/trans mounts?

wheels constantly losing and gaining traction

By the transfer of weight from the front of the car to the back of the car and back again.

Suspension is the best cure.

I've never had it, at least yet, not sure, but I'll think I'm gonna get the mount braces anyway, why not...

Man your missing out! Launching the car then these wonderfull vibrations start to happen feels kinda like your in a vibrating lazy boy. Then all in a sudden your car starts to feel an sound like someone kicked your cobalt down a long flight of steps. As your cars slaming up and down violently You watch as your sunroof trim breaks off permanatly and your radar detectar flies by your face almost taking your head off. I might add I think anybody with FWD should be able to experience the joys of wheel hop within there lifetime. If it wasn't for my ss/sc I would have never known what it is. I had only heard people talk about it, but now i feel left out nomore. But on a serious note what the hell, when gm was testing this car they didn't notice this shit?! I swear they designed the car to hop so people wouldn't abuse it because it only happens if you try to launch the car to hard. And after you make it hop a couple times you don't want to try anymore cause it feels like your braking the car.

I have bought the torque brace from weapon R and it completely stopped my wheel hop. I went with that setup because it was really easy to install. It took about 10 min. The kit is $150 shipped.

i have the kit as well but i went with the dual brace. i gained .3 with it. this was the best mod for the money IMO

LittleSS,

Can you explain the dual brace?
I assume also from weapon R?
And does the engine transmit more vibration with the kit installed?

My FWD 442's quit wheel hopping when I added stiffer springs and poly suspension bushings and stiffened the stock engine mounts. Made the car quite a lot noiser inside though, and I really would like to keep the SS nice and quiet.

I agree completely. Not only does wheel hop feel bad, it's very hard on the drivetrain, your fillings etc.

bTW....from a roll, if I rev it iu and drop the clutch it hops. In the rain, it will hop whenever the tires break loose.....which is pretty easy even with the LSD.

There are some you can also get from Goofyguy Torque Braces.

mine came from iron development.
it basically makes it a solid motor mount and yes the vibration is intese but for drag racing very nice. i only run at the track it just take 2 min to put on and take off. i run the single one all the time though and yes it does vibbrate a little more than normal but not a big deal. you have to take the good with the bad

The brace does help tremendously with the wheel hop, provided you install it correctly. Well, let me be more specific. The actual install is a 10-15 minute job, it's just preloading the dampner that can be screwed up. Not even that is hard though. Once on, it works beautifully. I have the GGTB/IronMan Brace and love it. For I think it's $100 now, you can't go wrong. And the dual brace is for a drag situation, where the extra stability is needed. Riding around with the one brace though, you really don't notice anything at all vibration or noise wise.

When I test drove an Ion Redline I got a lot of wheelhop through first and second on hard launches but I have never noticed it in my SS. What RPM are you guys launching at to really notice it? Maybe I am not driving my car hard enough...LOL

I've got wheel hop out the yazzoo from a 3K launch. a hair over 3K and I just sit still smoking, so I've started burning the clutch on a 3K launch and rolling into it- that's the only way I can get a decent launch, and it's hell on the clutch. I definately need to look into those braces. My Christmas list is getting longer everytime I turn around....... :D

When i dropped my car with sprint springs it pretty well eliminated the wheel hop situation.

For those guys who went through Iron Development, is there any performance difference between the 3.1(front mounting) and 3.2 (rear mounting). I do not want the 3.3 drag setup but I am not sure what the difference are between the other two. Any insite would be appreciated.

this is the set up i have mine is the front mount. for the money and ease of installation it is highly the best mod i have done. i strongly recomend this if you do any type of street/strip racing. granted it is not as good as the double brace but at least you can still drive around town and not worry about shattering your teeth. IMO

I'm thinking I may order one of these, could you please tell me where and what model number your front mount is. Did it eliminate all of the wheel hop ? Do you also get less wheel spin ?

ThanX

I was screwing around today in a residential area, and launched at 4000RPM, left a nice even strip of rubber about 30' long on the pavement, no hop at all. I only get hop when I launch at lower RPM.

Good info here guys, thanks again.

I can see it now, first dealer oil change.

"What's that little shock thing you added to the motor mount?"

"Well, that's to control wheel hop when I dump the clutch at 3000"

:-)

Sounds like lowering springs along with the damper will cure the problem.
