: Cobalt/SRT-4 & Ricer Fanboys.
uwilluz 03-19-2005, 09:10 AM Well, after reading through a couple of new threads since my last visit, I can safely say that I don't like the direction this forum is heading. Anyway, I have to throw out my thoughts on a comment made in the other forums about the Cobalt being "Just a Cavalier" and the SRT-4 being "just a neon".
First off, the Cobalt is NOT a Cavalier by any means. It is the REPLACEMENT for the Cavalier. That's kind of like calling a Ford Escort ZX2 "just a Ford Probe" as the Escort replaced the Probe.
Not the same thing guys.
Also, as for the SRT-4 being "just a neon" I agree and disagree on that. True, the SRT-4 is a Neon. No matter what, it IS a Neon. Just with an engine that wasn't optional in the base Neons.
Performance-wise, it is NOT a neon.
I belong to a Mopar car club here in the Carolina's and our members have a total of around 10 SRT-4's. Not a one of them will argue that their car is based on the Neon platform. However one has a saying "It's only a Neon until it beats you, then it's an SRT-4".
When I get my Cobalt SS S/C, I'm not going to deny it's a Cobalt. When someone asks what kind of car I drive, I'm going to say "A Cobalt SS".
Kind of like now when someone asks me what I drive, I say "A Dodge Daytona C/S". Unless the person I'm talking to is a car buff, I don't even bother mentioning that I drive a 1991 Dodge Daytona C/S Competition Model, 1 of only 150 made in 1991, 2.5L turbocharged 4-cyl. with a Getrag 5-spd manual tranny, putting down 152hp and 210ft.lbs of torque (stock) , running the quarter @ 15.2 bone stock in '91, but I have mine modified to run low 14's in the quarter with one free part to turn the boost up to 14.5 lbs, a 2.5" exhaust, and gutting the interior.
Pretty embarassing when your RSX Type S gets demolished by a rusted out, horrible looking piece of crap Daytona that I paid less than $1,000 for (including mods), isn't it?
Anyway, even though my car has a different suspension (Carroll Shelby Maximum Performance Suspension) than the average run-of-the-mill daytona's had, (different tranny as well) I don't deny that it is still "Just a Daytona".
I hate when people have to try to make themselves feel better by trying to make their car into something it's not, or denying what it is.

I agree with everything you posted execept one for one thing.
The Escort and Probe were in production at the same time, therefore, neither were replaced by the other. The only defense along those lines could be the Focus replacing the Escort.
uwilluz 03-19-2005, 10:55 AM I knew about them being in production at the same time... however, all the Ford reps talked about the Escort ZX2 replacing the Probe GT.
Oh well, as long as my point was made :D
JDMCivic 03-19-2005, 10:58 AM I knew about them being in production at the same time... however, all the Ford reps talked about the Escort ZX2 replacing the Probe GT.
I guess you could say that. The ZX2 really isn't like the older Escorts, it does have a sportier look and feel.
Oh well, as long as my point was made :D
That is all the matters. All in all, it is a good post.
css9450 03-19-2005, 11:20 AM The Escort and Probe were in production at the same time, therefore, neither were replaced by the other. The only defense along those lines could be the Focus replacing the Escort.
That is correct. The Focus replaced the Escort, although the Escort ZX2 model lingered along by itself for awhile after the regular Escorts were gone.
The lifespan of the Probe came and went right in the middle of Escort production; its an entirely different car.
I think its funny when SRT4 owners deny their car is a Neon (yes I know all the badging says "SRT4"). That's sort of like owning a Z28 and denying its a Camaro.
smokesmysi 03-19-2005, 11:46 AM I drive a neon :D
uwilluz 03-19-2005, 11:53 AM atta boy! :D

plainnsimple 03-19-2005, 09:48 PM I've met two or three people in my area that realize my car is a SRT-4. The rest don't realize it's a dodge. So, I've never had a problem saying my car is a neon. I've been driving neons since 99'. So as you were saying, all a Cobalt SS is, is a Cavalier? :p
-Jack
uwilluz 03-19-2005, 10:00 PM No, I'm saying it's NOT a Cavalier. Otherwise, it would be called a Chevrolet Cavalier Cobalt, right?
That's like saying a Neon is an Omni. You have your four-door economy car, then you have your newer four door economy car, but they are two different platforms/model lines.
Oh, and KSE, as I said in my earlier post. I claim to drive a Dodge Daytona C/S. If anyone asks for more info, I then tell them what it is exactly.
I'm not trying to make my car into something it's not. My car was a factory-made performance car built for the track, yet I claim it to be just another run-of-the-mill Daytona, of which thousands were made, not the 150 that were made of my C/S model and I NEVER say that it's NOT a Daytona.

i just found it funny that you tried to "show off" your car :p and TRY to make the RSX~S look like it's nothing... that car has plenty of power waiting to be unleashed as opposed to your maxed out engine (probly not maxed but still)... who cares what amount of $$$$ you did or did not have to spend, seriously
i drive a cavalier... a "Z24" cavalier ... ;) , LMAO
who cares what people think of your car.. you just tell them what it really is AFTER you beat them ;) .. whether they call it a neon, a s/c cavalier, or just a daytona... it doesnt matter, really
uwilluz 03-19-2005, 10:13 PM Haha I wasn't even trying to show off my car. My car is a piece of shit, that I will admit to. Though, even my import-driving buddies will admit it is fast.
As for my engine being maxed out. Well... let's just say that in our club there are well over 50 people running the 2.5L that I have, and they are all pushing well over 400hp/450ft.lbs reliably, with a few running over 500hp.
Either way, I'm not trying to talk my car up. Keep in mind that I'm buying a new Cobalt SS. Though I must throw out there, that in stock form, it's slower :p
*Edit* BTW, trust me, I don't care what people think of my car. Hell I just epoxied the passenger side mirror back on the door. Cream colored epoxy on a black car, now that looks pimp. :o

i understand, my 1988 cavalier is a pos too!
lol, i really need to take some pix, LOL.. its not a pretty site!
i was thinking of spending a little money on mine.. its a 2.8L.. figured i'd throw on the ussual... i/h/e...... who knows if i will.. i'd really like to, but then again, i really want another car
uwilluz 03-19-2005, 10:34 PM Also, I wasn't trying to belittle the RSX. It's just that most of the RSX drivers around here are the typical fanboys who think that $ equals speed. They drop $24-26K on a new car, throw on a $200+ CAI and think they are hell on wheels.
It's pretty embarassing when they get rolled on by my POS. And I do mean POS, it's got rust holes big enough to put your hand through :p
They get even more embarassed when they find out the engine itself is unmodified, w/ almost 160K on the clock. :)
Bottom Line: $ does not always equal speed. Of course, with enough money, you can polish a turd.

haha, good stuff...
my car hung with my biddies 91 SC300, LMAO... pretty funny IMO...
i also walked another "sort-of-buddy" in his 2000 Mercury Cougar (funniest shit is, he sold it 1 week later, no bullshit)
i wish i had gotten the turbo version of my car :o ... 3.1L V6 Turbo 205hp/225trq... :D
too bad they're REALLY hard to find.. atleast in my area :(
so for now, V6 2.8L 130hp/160trq will have to do! LOL
ive been looking for a new car like crazy, i found a nice 92 GSX that was at a good price, unfortunately it was sold before i could even test drive it... now, i got my eyes set on a 92 5.0 :D ...
.. i love ALL cars
NIVO88T 03-20-2005, 09:33 AM you get this kind of stuff no matter what site you go to.
I still don't see why some guys are against each other while buying domestic compact cars.
Isn't supposed to be, "we'll beat you import guys blah blah blah?"
uwilluz 03-20-2005, 09:36 AM Hey I've got respect for ALL fast cars, however, those that try to act fast when they aren't (no matter what type of car they drive) are my favorite targets. It tends to be the import crowd and V6 Mustang owners, but either way, makes for some fun for me!
Given, I'm running low 14's and that is slow to me. But when I roll on a riced out import that is still running low-mid 16's, I seem insanely fast to them :D

actionjackson 03-20-2005, 12:30 PM I walked a Cavalier already. All I have is an intaker.
He got pwned.

BTW, the 2000 Merc Cougar (even V6) is a slow-ass piece of doggie-doo. :) He made a good choice in selling it. :) A Civic could kill it.
Back on topic...
I don't even want to get into the Cobalt SS/SC vs SRT-4 vs RSX-S anymore. With the Cobalt SS and SRT-4 you're just paying for power, nothing more. But that seems to be all people care about. Again, personal opinion.
uwilluz 03-20-2005, 12:57 PM Well, Honestly my thread topic was a little off. This thread wasn't intended to pit the cars against one another. I am a fan of all three....
except I don't like the attitude of MOST RSX owners... and about 1/2 of the SRT-4 owners act the same way.
As for Cobalt owners, only time will tell.
And personally, I love the Cobalt SS interior, I think it is very nice. The SRT-4 interior doesn't really suit my tastes, plus I've always loved 2 door cars. All five of my cars were 2 doors... long in the doors as well.
I've owned (in order)
'96 Beretta Z26
'91 Daytona Shelby
'97 Avenger ES
'94 Grand Prix
'91 Daytona C/S
As I said, lots of leg room, and screw the passengers! :D

this is hilarious... i hate when someone parks too close or i have to park close to someone else.. i almost stumble out of the damn car, not to mention twisting my back in the most anoying position!!!

Dude, we should definitely race.
I walked away from an SC300 and could hang with my friends Cougar. He has since bought an RSX-S that would easily destroy me.
Here is the plan. You drive halfway across the country and I'll do the same. We'll meet up and run the most competitive 16 second 1320 ever :D
uwilluz 03-20-2005, 02:17 PM This probably isn't going to win me any brownie points, but I have a story to tell.
As I said earlier, my car is a piece of it. I mean, every body panel either has a rust hole in it, dents, scratches, whatever. Some have it all.
Anyway, one day I was at the mall, someone parked so close to me that I COULDN'T EVEN GET IN MY CAR!
Now that is pathetic, as I am 6'1" and 145lbs. I'm about 8 inches thick at the stomach, so if I can't get in the car... you know they were close.
As most of you know, if you ENJOY your car, you don't park that close to a piece of crap.
Needless to say, I walked around to the passenger side... climbed in, sat on the console and reached for my drivers side door handle. My friend said "what are you doing?" and gave me the  look.
I pulled the door handle, and then kicked my drivers side door as hard as I could into their car door, leaving a cantaloupe sized dent. Then, I buckled up, backed out and left.
Normally I wouldn't do such a thing... but their right side tires were in my spot by at least a foot. Now that is bad parking. I'm sure they learned their lesson.

Kieth you're a true pal...
too bad it's too far, lol.. i'd DEFINATELY be up to it (if you were like within 200 miles or something) lmao..
btw, is it stick or auto?... i must warn you that my 3spd auto owns when i shift it!!!!! ;)

i just bursted out laughing and my family is lloking at me likw WTF!?
ok, you pick the spot.. its 2592 miles.. so we'll meet up half-way.. im leaving now since i have to do the following
1. steal money to have enough gas
2. call nextel and make sure i have service incase my car dies on the way (most likely will)
3. practice my launching (lmao, j/p)
4. convince my g/f that it is important for me to drive 1200+ miles in an effort to settle this challenge and have her bring the AAA card just incase!:D

uwilluz 03-20-2005, 04:42 PM my post was in jest.
actionjackson 03-20-2005, 07:02 PM So as you were saying, all a Cobalt SS is, is a Cavalier?
Yes... Haven't you been paying attention.
Chevrolet changed the name of the Cavalier to appeal to the younger, ricier generation. They felt "Cobalt" was "neater". Hence the name change. Then, they stole a few Saturn body panels and slapped on a cheap supercharger and called it a poorly designed day.
BTW, all of my info was taken off some guys website that chronicles the entire history of the Cavalier/Cobalt.
CoBIZZLE 03-20-2005, 10:02 PM The RSX costs more than EITHER of the other two!!! So what would you be paying for in that... a Japanese name  Because its underpowered by both and the Cobalt's interior is goin to be at LEAST as nice.

Go for a vertical door/lambo door mod. :)

I'll have to disagree there. Have you sat in an RSX? When I saw the Cobalt's pics, I thought the interior looked nice in the Cobalt until I sat in one. No offense but my Gran Turismo 4 Driving Force Pro steering wheel (just the wheel itself and not the turning) and pedals feel better than the Cobalt's. Everything felt like cheap plastic to me (try a Cobalt/Pursuit steering wheel that's not wrapped in leather or whatever). I can get into details but I'll make this short. Acura = luxury. Chevy != luxury. You're deluding yourself if you're saying the RSX is equal to or less than the Cobalt's.
Yes, the Cobalt SS/SC's faster, but the RSX-S gets you laid. :)
Scourge 03-21-2005, 12:08 AM I don't like the attitude of MOST RSX owners... and about 1/2 of the SRT-4 owners act the same way.
As for Cobalt owners, only time will tell.
Actually, I've seen it quite a lot. You may not as you're more likely to agree with their opinions. I know most Cobalt owners are excited about their cars because hey, everyone Cobalt owner has a new car. And generally, when someone has something better in some respect, they tend to get cocky and focus in that area. In this case, it's horsepower. They also tend to be forgiving of their car's cons (or tend to ignore them completely).
If you check out ClubRSX, you'll see the general consensus is that yes, the SRT-4 and Cobalt SS/SC (and Ion RL) are faster (stock vs stock) so I'm not sure I understand when you say MOST RSX owners. Yes, it's true that a lot of the ones you've seen here are trolls.
Oh yeah, about kicking your door into that bad parker's passender side door, you should have left a sorry note so they'd have noticed it right away. :D I know for one that I hardly ever look at my passenger side door.
uwilluz 03-21-2005, 08:08 AM The comment I made about RSX owners was the ones I've personally run into here in the Carolina's.
As for the forums, that's another story altogether.

sorry but at clubrsx, you guys can't even agree with eachother!

Well I can't debate this point because I haven't sat in an SS yet BUT everything that I've heard has been VERY positive, your actually the only person that I've heard say they didn't like it. Guess I just have to wait and see myself. :(

I don't care about that part.
For one thing, I'm not a whore. (Seriously though, I'm in a long term relationship and I'm waitin til I get married for that anyways)
And for another, even if I was... I wouldn't need a nice ride to get laid. I could do that just fine w/ my 2.2L S-10. HAHA
I'm just messin with ya man. I really do see your point. And like I said can't debate it cause... well... I don't have mine yet... :( ...DAMMIT!!!

I don't like it but I didn't say I wasn't impressed. :) I think what GM did was smart though. And producing a powerful car and making it relatively inexpensive is going to do them well.
But I have my predictions on what will happen later this year. There's a certain new car coming out in 2006 which will carry a very well-known name and thus its popularity in the tuner (and unfortunately ricer) scene.

Come on man, you don't need a car to get you laid. I was a pimp in highschool driving an '81 camaro with almost 200,000 miles on it. People that need cars to get laid are the same ones that talk about their parents money all day to get laid. 'Uhhh, yea, well my dad owns this dealership....' ATHF!

Ok, I'm not bashing here, but what is the difference between the new Si, and the current RSX? The more I read on it, the more it seems like a rebaged RSX. I'm not sure of all the technical stuff inside the Si there, but styling-wise, powerwise, etc. It really seems like an RSX-S. In fact I watched a car show on Speed this weekend where they even called it a re-baged RSX for a lower income demograpic. Which I translated to 'cheaper RSX'.

I hope you aren't talking about the Supra (which is scheduled for next year)
It's rumored to have a 10 cyl and be priced around 100K..... so I hope that's not what you are talking about ;)
However, the new supercharged Eclipse looks nice as well.

I haven't heard anything about an 06 Eclipse S/C but from what I read, the GT model is suppose to have 260 hp. Although there was no talk about a S/C motor, but it would be interesting if one was to be made?

espo19047 03-24-2005, 09:46 AM General Motors Awards Chevrolet Cobalt SS Supercharged Coupe Project to Gravana – Aftermarket Enthusiasts Prepare for a Twin-Charged Cobalt SS Coupe
General Motors and Gravana Launch Partnership Early in an Effort to Capitalize on the Excitement Created Last Year by Gravana’s Project Cobalts.
Valencia, CA (PRWEB) March 23, 2005 -- In February 2005, General Motors awarded Gravana a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt SS Supercharged Coupe for two primary reasons. First, Gravana is currently leading the industry in New Product Development for Cobalt Aftermarket. Second, the exposure and excitement created around Gravana’s 2004 SEMA Cobalts has allowed consumers to gain ideas of what they themselves can build once they buy a Chevrolet Cobalt. Unlike 2004, in which GM delivered two Cobalts one month prior to the SEMA Show deadline, Gravana will have at least six months to build this Cobalt for the 2005 Las Vegas SEMA Show.
For 2005, Gravana will build the ultimate “Twin-Charged” Cobalt SS Coupe. The stock Chevrolet Cobalt SS Coupe comes from the factory with an Intercooled Supercharger that produces 205HP. Gravana will add a Turbocharger ON TOP OF the factory Supercharger, to increase the power to approximately 300HP. In addition to building this monstrous power plant, Gravana will focus on expanding its line of products for the Cobalt, including a vented hood, Teske Design series body kit and several performance products for the standard SS Coupe. Gravana will again rely on companies such as Recaro, Boston Acoustics, Motegi, H&R and Goodyear for marketing partnerships on this project.
“We are truly honored to have been awarded this project so early in the season. As we learned from last year’s Gravana Project Cobalts, the excitement of these modified cars is helping to drive traffic to Chevrolet dealers. Given the great platform provided by Chevrolet, along with the early start on aftermarket products, the Cobalt has already become a desirable Tuner Car. Chevrolet has an aftermarket winner on their hands. We are just happy to be involved with such a great organization,” said Jim Lupold, President of Gravana. “We look forward to unveiling the Gravana Twin-Charged Cobalt SS Coupe at this year’s SEMA Show.”
Gravana’s product line-up for the Cobalt SS Supercharged Coupe includes, but is not limited to, a 50-state legal Air Intake System, Header, Exhaust, Evo Style Hood, Body Kit, Coil-Over Suspension, Strut Bars, Carbon Fiber Door Sills and Engine Covers, and a variety of additional upgrades that compliment the car. Companies interested in a marketing partnership on the Gravana Cobalt SS Supercharged Coupe, or any other Gravana project vehicle, should contact Gravana using the contact information below.
About Gravana
Gravana manufactures and sells aftermarket performance products and accessories for GM vehicles. Gravana strives to be the ultimate source for performance products and accessories for most late-model GM vehicles. While the idea started in 1998, Gravana, Inc. was founded in 2003 after several years of research and planning. Company founder Jim Lupold started his career working in the family auto repair business at age 13, building his first GM vehicle – a Pontiac Trans-Am – before he could even drive. After college and a successful career in motorsports, he cut his professional teeth with aftermarket companies Neuspeed, RK Sport, CarParts.com and Performance Products. While Gravana plans to build four (4) project vehicles for 2005, the Chevrolet Cobalt SS Supercharged Coupe is the first to arrive.

mm_omega2 03-29-2005, 11:48 AM I dunno, I guess I just can't understand why everyone seems to want to bring up what the car is based from allllll the time. It is just someone's way of trying to talk trash I guess. If not then leave it alone already. Pretty much every single car out has had a crap counterpart it was based off of. Noone these days can take a whooping or even dish one out without blowing it out of proportion and talking way too much crap.
A cobalt ss is a cobalt ss and srt-4 is an srt-4 and so on.
omfg, LOCK THIS ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!
JDMCivic 03-30-2005, 06:56 PM omfg, LOCK THIS ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!
Why? No need IMO.
uwilluz 03-30-2005, 10:23 PM any girl who will only **** me cause of my car, I'm not going to give the time of day to anyway.
Heck, my current girlfriend wants to paint my 'tona to look like a cow, then take it street racing, haha.
I don't mess w/ gold diggers. First one that comments on the brands of clothes I buy or how my car is "old" get the boot.
mm_omega2 03-30-2005, 10:27 PM until you end up racing one in your rsx and your girl is sitting right next to you and you have to tell her you just got your ass handed to you by a neon or cavalier.

or a rusty-assed turbo dodge that's painted like a cow, complete with pink-udder exhaust. :D
ArrivalBlueSS 03-30-2005, 10:35 PM It's not a Cavalier  It's an entirely different car. If you want a cavalier you can still buy one.
J-body != Delta
mm_omega2 03-30-2005, 10:43 PM or a rusty-assed turbo dodge that's painted like a cow, complete with pink-udder exhaust. :D
even better, i'd ahve to see that, i don't even think I would mind being beaten by it.
It's a new body style replacing the Cavalier, "basically" the same thing, it's like the old Ford Ranger Bronco and the Explorer now.
uwilluz 03-30-2005, 10:47 PM even better, i'd ahve to see that, i don't even think I would mind being beaten by it.
Hehe that's good, because I've taken two stock srt-4's and one w/ an intake so far, hehehe they weren't laughing for long.
Not saying I'm that fast.... people who can shift their srt's will stay right beside me.
Of course, as soon as I install my intercooler and raise boost another 4 pounds, it will be a different story.
You have the Sunburst Orange Metallic SRT??
If I don't get a Cobalt, that's what I'm going to get.
mm_omega2 04-01-2005, 12:29 AM It's Orange Blast Pearl, but yeah pretty much same thing. The color attracts a lot of attention. Look great when just washed and waxed, tinted windows sets it off real good too.
I don't mind losing at all in a race as long as it's good race, with that I mean if you pull up and look over at each other and rev and race or if you schedule one I don't mind losing to anything, I just can't stand little punks that think they have the fastest car on the planet coming up loud as hell, rev'ing at every single car on the street laughing giggling pointing then if you lose they go completely retarded screaming and yelling that you just got beat, if they give no respect they get none. That is also the problem without a lot of little SRT-4 punks thinking they have a damn Ferrari, out racing a Taurus, a mini-vans, trucks, everything then talking trash. That is what gives the rest of us bad names now they think everyone with an SRT is one of those little Fast and the Furious kids, it will happen with the Cobalt as well, it only takes a few to screw over the rest.

Agreed.
Oh and sorry about the color mix-up, lol I had the Cobalt name on the brain.
I'm one of the few people who like the Orange Blast on the SRT-4's.
However, I will admit that I think it looks like poo with the stock wheels.
My opinion: Dark window tint, C/F hood, and some black or gunmetal wheels and it will look incredible.
mm_omega2 04-02-2005, 08:46 PM Agreed, I just have not gotten around to painting the rims but plan on going with gunmetal color when I get back home. I only had the car for 2 months before I was shipped off but rest assured that there will be plenty more done to it when I get home.
I've done the dark tint all around, got the stripe kit that I prefer (pictured below on a silver srt) I ordered the stripes in dark grey, gunmetal for my car, going to do the rims and new taillights. I think everything should look rather nice. Hopefully.
CoBIZZLE 04-03-2005, 01:18 AM Those stripes look REALLY good, I'm partial to those kind of graphics, I have gotten to where I cant stand the graphics that wrap the WHOLE car with people fightin and girls all over them or japanese "rising sun" emblems, they are just too gaudy for me. But the simple stuff still appeals to me. Where did you get that stripe? I think that will look hot on my girlfriends Neon! I'd like to fix her car up for her but I'm not sure if her parents will let me and her do anything to it or not.
edit- oh and no hers is not an SRT-4 :(
mm_omega2 04-03-2005, 04:47 AM check out www.revolution-motorsports.com , srt-4 section and scroll down to the #111 stripe kit, $59.99 shipped. Wife said mine got to the door in about 3-4 days.
Just show them a picture and let them know the stripes can do no harm to the car, they can be taken off. Maybe they will come around and give you the thumbs up.
CoBIZZLE 04-03-2005, 08:52 PM Awesome!!! I appreciate it man thats really cool!! I'll probably be gettin that cause she loves that look!!!
