hi, im wanting to do that airbox mod, where you leave off the bottom cover and replace the filter with an aftermarket filter, people say if you not to buy the k&n for $60 when you can get just a regular one for $24.99 kinda thing, anyways what i wanna know, is do they mean just get a replacement one for our car? wont that just be the same as our stock one?? if not what type should i get?? cone?? measurements?? i live in canada so thats why im asking this because no one here carrys the same brands as the states carries. thanks for the help.

I have a 3" inlet CONE K&N that I will be setting up in spring (left over from a jeep I had) It worked great on the jeep. Does anyone have a pic of how the did this?
My opinion on filters is go K&N or perhaps AIR HOG. otherwise dont risk going with something for $25. you get what you pay for.
3" opening and i think my was spectre anyway here is a link to everything you need to know with picslink (http://www.*************/forums/showthread.php?t=3890) the only problem i ran into was making that darn hole big enough and at the right angle to tighten the screw on the cone but other than that this how thread was great. some people cut the box out and leave the top here is a link with a pic of what that looks like link2 (http://www.redlineforums.com/forums/howto-section/6539-short-ram-install.html)
good luck

ssnipes look at my thread called ghetto air induction or ghetto cai I forget what I called it. This thread will tell you the best possible way to do the air box mod for the most gains. Best of all it can all go back to stock in 20 mins. I cut nothing nor did I drill a hole into anything. SC whines like crazy. Better MPG it seems also. I was averaging 19 mpg before I disconnected my battery and did the mods and now i am averaging 21 mpg.

Here is one (High flow) that will fit 100% in the stock airbox with the lower cover in place and it's specifically for the 2005-2006 Cobalt SS/SC :

Here is another one (High flow conical) that fit too, but without the lower lid and you'll have to do a little hole to screw the collar that will held the filter in place :

Or just use gutter strap and mount to the exisiting holes gm put there. Or you can use a cut out of chicken wire ( very pourous ) and screw into the factory holes. Your filter will go nowhere and get all the air it needs.
