Hey nice site. I'm getting a new car next year, possibly a Cobalt SS. I'm planning on getting rid of my 01 camaro v6. I'll miss her, but I'm ready for something new.

I will be buying one, 90% chance of that. It's coming down to the test drive and thats it. If I like it as much as I think I am going to, then I'll be selling my Camaro V6 project car and going with the Cobalt SS :) Nothing like GM Employee pricing + cash/trade in to knock down those payments!!!

I cannot wait! :D Oh, BTW, like my name? ;)

This Does sound like a plan, I plan on getting rid of my new 04 Mazda 3s and thinking about getting one. Just want to opt to SS and id be a happy camper.

Im already thinking off the mods i would want to do to it. They say that its gonna have a Eaton m62 Supercharger like the ones found on the GTP. :
( memories, of my old GTP. Wonder if its gonna be pretty similar?)

What about a Intercooler upgrade?? any ideas?

Cobalt is FWD and has equal length halfshafts.

according to the latest they tested it at 14.5@98mph...which is right on par with a stock 2003 srt4(they trapped between 96-100mph)

Zedda77

I would imagine it would be about right on the 1/4 times if not a little less

C&D says:

0-60: 6.1
0-100: 16.0
1/4 Mile: 14.7 @ 97mph
Top Speed: 140mph
EPA (city/hwy): 23/29

MotorTrend Says:

0-60: 6.0
Braking 60-0: 115'
1/4 Mile: 14.5 @ 98.2
Skidpad: 0.89g's
Slalom: 69.0mph

FWD

Oh, heres a quote or two:

"How good is it? In testing the Cobalt SS is the fastest regular-production front-drive car through the slalom we've tested in three years, rocking through the cones even faster than the new Corvette Z51. The SS outcornered the VW R32 on the skidpad, outgunned the Mini Cooper S 0-60, and outstopped the Subaru Impreza WRX 60-to-0mph."

if you ask me, its looking VERY good in our favor! :D

So far it seems the SS will not be much of a match for the SRT in a straight line but I think Chevy went more for a mix of power and handling with the SS. The SRT is a notoriously poor handler. From what we have seen on the SS so far it is a stellar handler and I have heard rumors of the SS making around 200whp. That puts it down by about 30whp to the Dodge. It would seem the SS is good for mid 14's maybe better since the trap speeds are a tad high for mid 14's but the 03 SRT's are good for 14 flat at 99 and the 04-05's are good for high 13's at around 103. I would imagine with intake, header, exhaust a pulley and tuning the SS should see some pretty nice gains though. The only thing its missing is just like the first year of the SRT is the lack of LSD. Although I hear a quaiffe unit is already available.

Not only that but the SRT-4 has much less when it comes to luxury. The SS has lots of weight from interior acoustics and road-sound deadening.. But yet, it may lose in the straight line, it still wins in the corners :D

I did a bit more research today and it would appear that I was wrong. The LSD will be available in the performace package which also includes Recaro seats :) However it will up the price to around $24,000 :(

wow, that is a high price to pay for the performance package, but I'm sure it will be worth it.

Nice website, glad to see it up and running along with the
saturn ION redline forums.

I will not be buying one right away...

However, when they become used, and my finances are a little more in shape, then I will be looking for an SS.

I joined this message board to stay on top of all the news and information on the Cobalts.

Is the 205hp to the crank or the tires. I imagine its to the crank.

the numbers are rated to be at the "crank", but as redline owners know they are between 196-210whp depending on dyno used.

just as the SRT4 is rated 230 crank HP but yet it displays this number at the wheels.

just an insurance, parent thing.

remember the LS1 C/F and the same year vette? LS1 Camaro/trans am firebird was rated 320 crank and the vette 345.

but the wheel numbers between both were almost idendical?

Underrating by GM once again.

What up everybody? I've given up on my 13.7 01 Cavalier because of the Cobalt SS.
This car has so much more potential. My friend is driving GM's race Cobalt this year so I hope I can get a nice deal on one. After all is said and done I will start modding this thing as soon as I get home. What are they going for fully load with the LSD?

Cobalt is looking good, but I'll have to test drive it to found out. Might talk my girlfriend into one, since I already have a SRT-4. Can't have her have a faster car than me.

After all is said and done I will start modding this thing as soon as I get home. What are they going for fully load with the LSD? This article lists the following price, but its hard to determine if they are talking fully loaded or not:

The Cobalt SS uses the same Ecotec powerplant as the Saturn Ion Red Line, a 2.0-liter supercharged four-cylinder that makes 205 hp and 200 lb-ft of torque and drives the front wheels through a five-speed manual. Normally that much power going through the fronts means torque steer, but in addition to equal-length halfshafts, our car came with the optional limited-slip differential, a rarity among small front-drivers and worth its weight on the option box. All SS models get 18-inch wheels (we remember when the Corvette got 16-inch wheels just about 15 years ago!), 215/45 tires and Recaro seats so grippy we felt like a hardball socked into a baseball glove. The SS stickers for just $21,995. However, I do not believe the $21,995 includes the LSD...

I may have old info, but I thought the buzz on the Cobalt ss was that it had a six-speed tranny... Is that part of the LSD, Recaro, etc. performance package or do I just have my head up my butt.
(This is refering to the article posted above me, tried to quote, but no success)

Another SRT4 guy here...

The only problem I have with the Cobalt SS is I can't seem to find the back doors. I have this thing called kids - back doors are a must. I hope GM isn't planning on pricing them above the SRT4 - bad move IMO. At the end of the day, it's not quite as fast. I've heard ruminitions that the stock SC is running at optimum efficiency and such, so seeing any substantial HP gains on this motor may be pricey.

The Cobalt SS looks like it is going to handle quite well - it seems like a good track car. GMs testing of the Ion RedLine on the 'Ring is a good testiment to their commitment to deliver a duo of cars that handle well.

To the comment that the SRT4 doesn't handle well - you need to watch the SCCA Runoffs :D The SRTs did pretty good against 400hp CTS-v's. I actually find the stock suspension up to the task - as long as you don't ask too much of it. Fluid inputs and treating the car like a tail-happy wagon seems to work best to wring out the performance from the stock SRT suspension. Cobalt SS sounds like it has a better set-up; we need some hands-on experience to get the whole story.

As for the stock SC is running at optimum efficiency, the M62 on a 2.0 being that its intercooled allows for more boost to be run safely. Not sure how much more boost tho.

In my opinion the Cobalt SS is great, I think it looks better than the SRT-4 and handles a lot better, also is priced 2K less than the SRT-4 here in canada (not the case in the US) Overall I think it's a great buy :)

Was all set to get a SRT 4 to go along with my '03 PT GT and now the Cobalt SS has caught my eye. It's really going to depend what mods will be available for it.

Hey all, new to the site and just wanted to give my thoughts on this:

I have been leaning more and more toward the Cobalt SS S/C, it has a lot going for it for me...the low price, very good performance with GM performance parts to back it up soon, the great handling, the great braking, the impressive exterior looks and I like the color combos available with the interior as well...

I'm still debating which is the better buy...a 2005 Subaru WRX or 2005 Cobalt SS S/C?

I like the looks of the cobalt much much more and the performance is very similar but I'd prefer a turbo and love the WRC Subaru Team (Peter Solberg is the man)...in my eyes the only thing stopping me from the cobalt is no AWD like the WRX has...then again the only thing stopping me from the WRX is it's not a coupe.

If GM comes out with enough performance parts and stage 1,2,3 packages that won't void my warranty than I can def. see myself in a Cobalt SS S/C very soon.

Don't forget that the stock SS runs on 87 octane....It would get better performance running on premium with more PSI through the SC.

Interesting, I'd like to see some numbers when the car comes out...I have heard though that 91 octane is recommended in the manual, not a problem I just hope the gas prices magically get cut in half. ha! :D

Backed by GM performance parts or dealing with the FoMoCo recalls every week: newest one I heard was this morning with their Truck and Suv line - faulty cruise control wiring could cause fires. FUN!

What's even the point of comparing the Cobra and the SS, they are completely different cars with completely different power applications?

Hmm, Z06 vette or a Mini Cooper S?

Kinda pointless.
