: Magnason upgrade kit
WOLFEMAN1981 05-27-2005, 12:16 PM I work for a Chevy dealer in denver where we put on a lot of Magnason supercharger kits on corvettes, trucks and SUVs. Anyways, I was talking to the Magnason rep and he told me in the next couple of months they will have an upgrade kit for the Cobalt SS and the Redlines that include a smaller pulley, a programmer, and an exhuast system to boost the HP to 275 HP. Don't have any prices yet.
CoBIZZLE 05-27-2005, 12:39 PM Wow, thats nice!! Make sure ya keep us posted on that one, and let us know on some $ figures when ya find out!! :D
thats wicked man, as much info as u can get please!!
87camaroPA 05-27-2005, 05:15 PM That is awsome keep us updated that would be a nice upgrade.
wheelburns 05-27-2005, 05:25 PM that would be all id do and be done with the car power wise. My dealer stopped doing the s/c installs after a few blown engines. we gunna start the price guesses im going with 1500
WOLFEMAN1981 05-27-2005, 05:50 PM Well, since I work with them my guess would probably be around 2000 retail. My cost will probably be around 1500
Cobalt115 05-27-2005, 08:48 PM Thats no deal if you ask me. You can almost buy a turbo for that.
87camaroPA 05-27-2005, 08:56 PM Thats no deal if you ask me. You can almost buy a turbo for that.
Well yes but you would have to have a new header made for the Cobalt. That would be expensive and a good turbo could be 2 grand. Why go though all of that when a upgrade could be done and you would not have to put much more than just labor and the upgrade? But that is just my 2 cents.
CoBIZZLE 05-27-2005, 11:47 PM If it costs that much Ill pass :(
WOLFEMAN1981 05-28-2005, 08:39 AM yeah 2 G's is alot, but thats ABOUT what its going to cost through my shop INSTALLED!!! without voiding the original warranty and getting a warranty thru magnason.
MY GTP 8 U 05-28-2005, 09:04 AM I hate to put down magnuson because they make such awesome S/C kits, but I think the better option for you guys would be to port your own blower and intake, buy a pulley, buy your own exhaust, and either buy your own programming software when it comes out or get your car dynotuned at a shop that has a programmer than can be used on your cars. The porting should be pretty cheap, especially if you do it yourself(only cost would be a Dremel and a bunch of bits), the pulley gonna cost between $150-200, a programmer we have yet to see a price, but HPTuners costs around $500 so figure that as a worst case scenario or you can dyno tune for a few hundred, and the exhaust should cost around $500 for a catback. So you might be looking at $1500 bucks or so to do it all yourself and probably see the same power gains.

Yeah i know but i would be a little scared to mess with the supercharger as far as porting it becuase i woulld be afarid to mess it up. But you do bring up a very good point.
Tahnks for your imput.
MY GTP 8 U 05-28-2005, 09:44 AM ALot of guys just have it done for them, and I dont think its all that expensive to do and its very worth it. I'm sure what Magnuson is selling is nothing but a ported and polished M62.
Its a good kit none the less for those of you looking for an easy bolt on. I just wanted to give a few ideas for those of you that are on a budget and cant splurge $2k+ for an S/C kit when you already have an S/C to work with.

Yeah i know and i thank you for giving some info and your money saveing ways. :)

I don't see why you would do it yourself when WOLFEMAN would or could do it for $500 dollars more, with some kind of warranty! I think the warranty part would be priceless, if you do it yourself then their goes the warranty. Just my .02!
I would also like to mention that only time will tell, and of course $$$$ that you have to spend.
yeah 2 G's is alot, but thats ABOUT what its going to cost through my shop INSTALLED!!! without voiding the original warranty and getting a warranty thru magnason.
MY GTP 8 U 05-28-2005, 01:57 PM Well for anyone that wants to make the drive to Denver to get a warranty then I guess this is a good deal.
After re-reading the original post, I dont see any mention of an upgraded S/C, just the pulley/exhaust/and programmer. I assumed that a whole new blower would be included due to the $2k estimated price tag, or at the least a new snout with a modular pulley system. If theres no blower or even snout included and people are going to pay that kinda money for just the pulley/exhaust/programmer, then I'm gonna start buying those items in bulk and sell them as a kit for an insane amount of money and make some easy cash!!!
VeloSSity 05-28-2005, 02:10 PM Hehehehe... coming from the LS1 world... it's weird to see you guys complaining about a $2,000 supercharger!!!!!
MY GTP 8 U 05-29-2005, 12:25 AM I think I was the only one complaining LOL!! And I dont even have an SS!! I just think there could be money better spent on a car that already has an S/C from the factory.
SLCFAST4 05-29-2005, 10:33 AM I don't think that is a bad deal at all. Look at the power that you are going to end up with. And if it is going to be a factory (basically) option then what better way to go then that. Even if it voids a warranty, you know it is going to work well. Copare it to the SRT stage 3 kit. That is like 3500 bucks!!!
CoBIZZLE 05-29-2005, 12:06 PM Whats the output for the SRT's stage 3 though? I would assume its a LOT higher than 275! But wow that is expensive too!!!

Lets also mention that with added mods, like FMIC and turbo back exhaust guys are pushing 380whp. a local to us ran 11.87@118mph on stage 3 turbo kit. no tuning needed!
ZX1100F1 06-07-2005, 03:50 PM If it costs that much Ill pass :(
If you didn't "pass" wouldn't you be putting the chicken in front of the cart?
CoBIZZLE 06-07-2005, 11:40 PM If you didn't "pass" wouldn't you be putting the chicken in front of the cart?
Huh?!?!? Never heard that expression before!
ZX1100F1 06-08-2005, 09:11 AM Huh?!?!? Never heard that expression before!
What color is your new Cobalt SS?
CoBIZZLE 06-08-2005, 08:00 PM I havent bought one yet, waitin on an 06, in wishful hopes of more power/options.
CoBIZZLE 06-08-2005, 08:01 PM LOL Nevermind I understand now, LOL I feel like a dipsh!t! :D
ericsean 06-09-2005, 08:35 AM I havent bought one yet, waitin on an 06, in wishful hopes of more power/options.
did you know that the solstice/skye is supposed to be a turbo version of pretty much the same engine as the SS right? and the rumor I have heard is that the SS might be coming with a turbo sometime '06-'07 model years. As I said its a rumor, but It comes from someone I trust.
edit: forgot to mention est. hp. I've heard stock 250-270.
CoBIZZLE 06-09-2005, 11:43 AM Yeah the Sky Redline is supposed to be about 253hp :D
potatoe 06-09-2005, 06:18 PM I watched the GM cobalt features video at work the other day. They said GM will have two kits comming out, Stage 1- 240HP, and Stage 2- 280 HP, the said they would be released in november?
jmonte345 06-09-2005, 07:34 PM That's awesome, I can't wait.
zfcamaro 07-01-2005, 03:08 AM Being an LS1 guy, $2K for a kit seems cheap. Heck that's what headers and my True Duals ended up costing me for my Camaro SS. But seeing as how that one sits in the garage and the Cobalt SS is gonna be the daily driver I would def buy a kit that brought us up to 280HP. In this light of a car that would be plenty to keep me in and out of traffic.
WopOnTour 07-01-2005, 01:34 PM I watched the GM cobalt features video at work the other day. They said GM will have two kits comming out, Stage 1- 240HP, and Stage 2- 280 HP, the said they would be released in november?I believe you are all talking about the same upgrades. GM Perf\Magnuson\Gravana (aka "the consortium") are all leaking out data on the "Staged" upgrades to be officially released in Vegas at SEMA this fall. The recent Cobalt SS IDL had a segment with GM Performance Division's Ken Wasmer announcing these kits to the GM dealers which seemed to solidify their development.(Gravana is apparently working on a "twin-charged" Cobalt SS for SEMA as well)
Stage 1 will include a pully and recal for the ECM and raises the RedLine and Cobalt SS engine horsepower to 230-240.
Stage 2 will include additional internal engine components as well as a performance clutch. These changes combined with the Stage 2 pully and another recalibration should able to raise the LSJ output to somewhere between 270-280HP *Please note Mr. Wasner did not specifically say WHEEL HP, so that's still an unknown, until they are offcially announced.
On the privateer front, I for one would be very surprised if ANYONE determined how to prevent the myriad of "rationality" DTCs from setting until these calibrations are released. (Although I hear PSI-FI is very close with some sort of "piggy-back" solution- we shall see)

Dan Richards 07-01-2005, 04:38 PM What Eaton supercharger do the LSJ's use - an M90 or M120? Magnuson already makes nose drive kits for both those superchargers, just tell em you have a Grand Prix GTP (M90) or Ford Lightening (M120) and they won't argue.
You could contact ZZPerformance (http://www.zzpreformance.com) for Magnuson components. They know their stuff. 1-877-ZZPerformance (997-3736)
MY GTP 8 U 07-01-2005, 08:14 PM LSJ uses an M60, smaller than an M90. I believe they are the same length with the snouts on, leading me to believe that the M60 snout might actually be longer than the M90's since the M90 has a bigger case.
