It has been a long time since my last update, so now I will let everyone in on where the project is at.
My complete car has been shipped to JBP as they get ready to assemble everything and then dyno tune and road test it.
The engine is waiting on the new Wiseco 8.0:1 pistons and then the engine goes back together. The head is all prepped and the deck plates have been made so each cylinder can have it own seal. The new intake manifold\intercooler has been finished. With this setup comes something not seen before and while some will be willing to pay the price, it won't be available to buy for a few months yet. The expectation is for the engine to be complete in two weeks. Once the engine is re-installed the new fuel system will be done. This will include a much bigger pump, a quality regulator and a fuel return setup. Tuning is still to be done with HPTuners but the fine details will be decided when the car breathes life once again.
The turbo setup is still going to be a twin turbo but it won't be a identical twin set. Instead it will be a maternal twin set. This will be a sequential setup with smaller of the two turbo's spooling by 1500rpm, producing virtually instant boost. The smaller turbo does not feed the larger turbo. The larger turbo will spool on it's own by the time it is needed to provide the higher rpm kick. The charge piping is almost finished as the mounting brackets were being done today. The expectation is for the turbo setup to be complete in three weeks.
The radiator has been moved 3inches forward to allow for more room for all engine bay components. There will be a scatter shield fabbed soon to protect me from a possible clutch\flywheel failure at high rpms. I ordered a custom Bully clutch today and it should be completed by the middle of next week. The expectation is that this clutch will hold 600tq and 750whp while still being streetable.
The transmission will be completely rebuilt. All gears, final ratio and input\output shafts will be remade using a very high grade of steel allowing for major hp\tq. The intermidiary shaft is also being redone using the same steel.
The driveshafts are still a stumbling block. I still have not gotten any firm commitment to having these produced even though I am talking to several companies. I hope to have this resolved be early next week. I have bought a set of SSBC big brakes but the driveshaft solution will decide if the can be used or not.
The cabin is going to have many gauges, a couple of boost controllers and an assortment of switches. Somewhere, a couple of those switches will be kill switches. I have painted the roll cage and put in my APC seats. The cage needs to be touched up because the seats were a real pita to make fit. The funny thing is that I am expecting to never actually use the APC's as I have some custom racing seats in the works. Other than the cage I have done nothing inside the car but due to some good fortune that will very likely change soon.
As I said at the beginning, my car is now in Toronto which is really close to Niagra Falls, the home of Keith Losier and Desired Customs (the home of the right hand drive Cobalt) I am in discussions with Keith to use his considerable talents to do something with my interior, worthy of the magazine photos that will be taken after everything is done. Keith also visited JBP today and then told me about some of my cool parts I have only heard of.
When my car gets home it heads straight to the shop for a *real* paint job. I am sticking with Victory Red and many coats of clear. I will also have a ghost image done on the sides of the car.
I am sure I have forgotten something so please forgive me in advance. :)
And please lets not have the usual that won't work\you need to....\that is rediculous\ectera, ectera.:)

Vic like i've said on 3 differant forums i wish you the best of luck and know that with HPT and the guys at JBP it'll make mad power and soon become the poster chilled of our car.

like we've talked before i'm doing an EXTREME small version of your set up but still none the less, same at hart. sounds like we'll be done about the same time.

thanks for your help VIA PM as well...and good luck.

thats crazy but awesome
i really wish this could be done w/ a supercharger
or gm would make a turbo cobalt origionally

I really wanted to keep the SC but in the end the huge delays weren't worth it. I have been with out my car since May 21st, 2006:(

i must not be up on the delay part
was that for a ported blower
i know intense is having a problem w/ that on their stage 5
or is it the delay of just parts in general

We started with the plan of doing a twin charge setup, but Turbonetics jerked me around. Then there were issues to make the turbo and SC play nice together (likely Hahn's reason for the delay. No one was tauting a SC swap and I didn't want to wait to pioneer it so I chose turbo. The twinh turbo was an after thought.:)

i remember that post on ss.net about your turbonetics sponsor issue's...that was shitty.

and the TC kit in the end in a issue in its self...the blower just becomes a restriction in the charge path for the turbo.

i like your TT set up more!!!

so do i
for some reason twin charging seems like a soon to be a big problem

jonsstockrocket
01-04-2007, 10:26 PM
and it makes me think that they dont know which one to choose from
and ull get more power out of the tt setup

Well I don't know about a balt, but my car just got it's first breath of life after my twin turbo setup finished this last summer. I still have a few bugs to work out on mine, but it's all still the same. Only difference between my setup and this one is he's using a 4 cyl, and I'm using a 6, and he's using the maternal twin setup and I'm using sequential (where the smaller of the two spools the larger). I have yet to take it to the track or the Dyno, but right now just on 18psi of boost out of my Garrett GT4718 - 763740-2 (found here: http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobygarrett/catelog/Turbochargers/GT47/GT4718R_763740-2.htmGT4718 - 763740-2 ), I'm guessing I'm getting around 800 - 900 hp at peak boost around 5000 rpm, and about the same or more for torque. Only problem I have with my car that's a major issue for me is traction. I have none through my first 3 gears. But nothing that slicks can't take care of. Oh, and yes, this is my summer driver. It is all still road legal.

Thanks guys. While I am dying for my car to be finished, it is good to know that the whole Cobalt community is just as eager to see the outcome. I hope that light I see is the end of the tunnel, oh wait, that's the wife turning the bathroom light on. Oh well, soon guys, soon.:D

Well I am for sure sticking with 400HP now. I am not keen on spending the money you did to get to where you are. I glad someone is doing it but wholly that is just nuts. as I read $$$ signs kept on going up in my head especially reading the transmission modifications. We will just keep things sane I think. may do twin charged Hahn kit and that is it. what breaks from there will be changed.

The last main mods, transmissiom, driveshafts, fuel system are definitely not cheap but I am too far into this project to turn back now;)

Yeah I understand but you set a goal and I have to give you credit for not backing out. No offence I really appreciate what your doing. My pockets are not as deep as yours at this time...LOL. You knew what you wanted. I am still figuring that out. YOu have made my journey easier. You should feel good about that. Thank you. <--(bet you dont hear that every day)

Your right I don't.:D Your welcome.
The good thing about my project is that there will be several parts available after I am done that didn't exist when I started this endeavour. When you and others choose a build, you will have a few more ways to get there and hopefully faster than I getting there.:)
