Im going to be buying a muffler for my sc this winter but i need to know which one sounds realy good. My car will have the Stage 2, cold air, header and 2.5 inch cat back. But i want a muffler that not so loud. Something that purrs and sounds powerfull. Any ideas?

not really, one is mostly a "psuedo" muffler but is still functional, it just doesnt flow as much as the other does

When looking for a muffler on a four cylinder just make sure to stay away from fart cans and chambered mufflers.


From what I have heard Magnaflows and Borla mufflers sound the best. Also make sure you leave the resonator in place. It robs 0 horsepower and soaks up a load of buzz.

gmpp exhaust is the ONLY exhaust under $500 that sounds good on these cars

I would advise not getting magnaflow mufflers alone unless you want to get ear plugs. The drone will get to you. I tried it twice on both my cars hoping it would be different. I replaced both of them shortly.

The only way I would use Magnaflow is to replace the stock resonator with the biggest you can find and fit. Magnaflow muffler with Magnaflow resonator. I'm new to Cobalt so I can't advise what size. But this set up does work well on other 4 cylinder cars. It will give you a nice tone without the drone.

why a new muffler? just get a longer resonator, it will deeper and quit the exhaust.

The pure velocity loss of a chambered muffler will not add torque or horsepower. You are most likely reffering to a ful cat-back anyway aren't you. In that case say on a Mustang the added 1-2HP is from more free flowing pipes.

I actually spent time and a load of money experimanting with exhausts on my cars trying to find a performace and sound balance. Flowmaster only added power vs a stock muffler and only down low at high RPM's it actually cost me 2-3HP.

Different cars equal different results. The addition of power down low was on my LT1 Formula. It added only 2HP below 4,000 because of muffler volume. The same muffler completely choked beyond 4,000rpm.

To get the Torque you imagine you have down low the Flowmaster would have to be more restictive than a stock muffler. They suck but not that bad in most cases.


Unless we are talking major exhaust upgrades 99% of the time exhaust will add only HP anyway not TQ.

I must say i would go with the GM performance Exhaust for $357.57. Claims 12Hp gain but as we all know its around that number same for any exhaust. Companys that are charging close to $700 with the same Hp gain. Few good ways to get examples of the sounds of different exhaust is youtube.com or some sites offer a sound clip ;)

so yeah ima pull this one back up i guesse cause its the only thing close to what im looking for. the magnaflow muffler by itself from what i have heard will give u a nice deep throaty toen with a decent growl at the top end not a "screamin eagle".
anyone happen to want to confirm. im looking at just the muffler and then the stage 1 and thats all i can afford at the moment but it will be about 40hp gain total i guesse.
