Why do you need a lift to install a drop in filter? It just drops in and connects in the airbox.

well the stock airbox supposedly is behind the wheelwell or along those lines...i kno it atleast isnt visable from simply poppin the hood...i read somewhere that without a lift ud need to jack it up and take the tire of and some other stuff to put it on and that seems like a waste of my time

Riiiight..... it's really not that hard man. jack the car up, remove 5 lugs, take the wheel off and pop out some clips. It would be a waste of time driving to the dealership to put the car on the lift and so on. But to each is own.

i just got it put on and it sounds pretty good...there not much of a noise from the filter itself, but the supercharger whines quite a bit louder, expecially throughout first and second gear. It made it a little bit more responsive as well and until a full CAI comes out i think its worth the 50 bucks

so just the drop in filter makes the sc whine much more noticable? i haven't looked under the car yet, but when i install my w/i this weekend i'm gonna put it up on a rack to see what kind of options we have with the stock airbox and swapping it out for a cone

Now I know for our cars, just a drop in filter would void our warranty. Is that the same with your cars? As I'm sure it would be consider as performance? Even though you don't really gain much from it?

it shouldn't void your warranty.. go read up on the magnusson-moss suit

Ummm, you must have some of the strictest delarships in the country. Our delarship doesn't even give things such as a CAI or Exhaust so much as a seccond look. Although I guess this could have something to do with them selling a lot of Joe Gibbs trucks and other high performance stuff. lol

Why would a filter void a warrentee? It should not.

The only way I can see it voiding your warranty is if something happened to your engine in result of that filter!

But seriously, it takes what 15 minutes IF THAT to put it in and out, just take it out if something happens!

It is ridiculous if they do void it! I would DEFINETLY try and fight it.

I dont know, I have heard quite a few people say it is a pain to change them for some reason, I dont know the reason, because I have yet to be lucky enough to look under the hood of one.... :(

Ha Ha... I haven't looked under one either but I couldn't see it being to much. But honestly, even if it took an hour it still wouldn't be bad if you can save yourself on your warranty... Ya know?

Well i heard the filter in in the wheel well but still that filter should do no damage to the car what so ever.

This is true... BUT

If the dealership can link a 'lets say' 'blown engine or hydro lock' to the filter than he will be in trouble! His best bet is just to remove it if he runs into a problem and call it a day!

You'll soon see how strict GM will become, once enough peeps bring their cars in for repair under warranty. The reason why I asked, wasn't because I've encouter this issues myself, but because after calling the dealer and the warranty department, I was informed by both offices, that just a aftermarket filter would void the warranty. All of you guys know, that a dealer would rather find any possible excuse to not work on your car for free. Unless you have inside connections. If not, then good luck with that. Unlike the SS, I can remove my intake system in and out pretty easy. I only asked my question, was because the person who started this thread, mention getting it done at the dealer. But for those that have extended warranty, try calling your warranty office, and find out if an air filter would void your warranty. Once the racing starts with these cars, you'll see how fast GM runs from warranty work, just like how Mitsu did to the Evo's, and how Chyrsler did to the SRT's.

I've used K&N filters in both my '91 Formula and '98 GTP, even put the K&N sticker on the airbox, and taken them both in for warranty service (bad wires, bad oxygen sensor, and warm air conditioner between the two). Never heard a word from either of the dealerships about it, don't think you would in the case of our Cobalts, either.

Now, if you install it yourself and don't use the gasket, and maybe you live in a dusty/sandy area and they can prove that damage was caused by foreign objects slipping by the filter, then they can turn you down for that particular warranty repair.

And from what I understand, the warranty company pays the dealership, so the dealership makes the same money with or without the warranty.
