: Will GM release an ECU upgrade to boost horsepower considerably?
ekool 01-15-2005, 11:33 PM The rumor mill says that GM will release an "upgrade" shortly after the Cobalt SS hits the streets in large numbers that will significantly increase the stock horsepower output.
Some are claiming a 35hp to 70hp increase (mostly achieved by raising the boost)
What does everyone else think?
Nocturn 01-21-2005, 02:46 AM I highly doubt that GM will release a 275HP Cobalt, mainly as with its low weight it would come to close to their other performance cars, not to mention cross segments with other cars, I.E. the GTP G6, and SS Monte Carlo.

I think what he means is a package close to what dodge is doing with their SRT4. Add on the power after the purchase.
It's going to be nice if they raise the rev limiter.
Pablo 01-21-2005, 04:27 PM I think it's possible, I work at a pontiac dealership and we have no such info yet, but if they do it would be interesting to see what kind of numbers it could put down.
breckboarder55 01-22-2005, 05:02 PM it would be nice but i dont think its going to happen
ekool 01-22-2005, 09:40 PM Yah, I was referring to an aftermarket package, ala Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3, etc.

Ohh, well that seems much more likely, but then its up to dealers or not whether to carry them. GM might do this as they did it with the GTO's sport appearance package that was going to be a factory option. Havn't herd anything about that though.
Pablo 01-23-2005, 12:00 AM Well as far as an aftermarket packakge I can honestly see somebody doing a BPU (basic performance upgrade) which have become so popular now adays which seems like it first started with the supra guys so you might have a BPU car with a chip and a BPU+ would be lets say a chip, pulley and exhaust.
87camaroPA 01-24-2005, 09:25 AM I could see that being relased in a short time after it is reseled.
NIVO88T 01-24-2005, 09:33 AM I doubt with all the engineering GM put into the sport compact racing scene in the summit sport compact series that some of that knowledge would not make it into the aftermarket for the Cobalt SS.
Remember that GM has been racing the cavalier with the Ecotec for a long time now.
Here is a link (http://www.gm.com/cgi-bin/pr_display.pl?4058) about the Ecotec in the GM FWD Drag Car.
"With the GM Ecotec global powerplant, we're making over 1,000 horsepower, and the majority of the engine components are production parts," said Josh Peterson, GM Racing Sport Compact program manager. "We're using a production block, production main bearing girdle, production cylinder heads, a production oiling system and a production drive chain. It's simply amazing what we can do with this basic engine package. We believe that we will ultimately reach more than 1,150 horsepower before we exceed the limits of the production parts."
"Many of the heavy-duty Ecotec components developed by GM Racing for the Sport Compact drag racing program are now available to enthusiasts through GM Performance Parts. These include complete race-prepared blocks, ported cylinder heads, steel billet crankshafts, connecting rods, pistons, copper head gaskets, aluminum intake manifolds, racing camshafts, neutral-balanced countershafts and intake and exhaust manifold flanges."
REDRUM03 01-27-2005, 06:05 AM i'd like to know if this upgrade will work on 2.2 eco. i've put a turbo on my 03, but would still love to push out more power. :D
geoffW 03-13-2006, 06:14 PM GM wont be leasing a mod like this. . .but Delphi and myself are currently working togeather to re-map my stock one for my cobalt 2.2l base coupe. If all goes well then Delphi will be making them
Nukem 03-14-2006, 05:24 AM I don't think GM will have anything past the stage kits
ssnipes 03-14-2006, 09:38 AM Rumor has it gm is going to build a AWD, 6spd, 300HP cobalt based on some components from the VIBE AWD. this is to rival the dodge excaliber.
now if the BS flag came up in your mind then your right. if not then you are a dreamer.
ItalianJoe1 03-14-2006, 12:18 PM I raised the flag at AWD. Too much money to re-tool a FWD car to AWD. Maybe in the next model redesign, but i would bet against it. And why is it that people think GM can release a reflash for 30+ hp? theres not that much in a 200 hp engine to gain with just electronics, you have to at least change injectors and a pulley.
16sy16 03-14-2006, 12:23 PM I wish GM would build the Colorado SS with AWD as an option, but it'll never happen. And way to bring up a dead thread!
Nukem 03-14-2006, 07:03 PM the stage 1 reflah I think is just for the injectors and raise the rev. limiter
CobaltSScrazy 03-14-2006, 09:54 PM not going to happen ALTHOUGH IT SHOULD our cars will get owned by the caliber srt4 when it comes out :(

They couldnt do that, it would be too expensive. The Colorado already is a bust because for a few thousand more, you can get a full-size. For most people, that is a better deal. They need to keep the Colorado as cheap as possible. An AWD SS version with a H.O. V6 or V8 would be a $35k + truck.
16sy16 03-15-2006, 06:31 PM They had a SS LS2 concept that was friggin awesome, but it was only 2wd. I just want them to sell them so I can pick one up used in a few years...

GM just loves to create rumors. how about that 120k vette that should have come out three times? you prob never heard about that, if not, they have started the rumor again. because of the amazing sucess with the z06, GM was supposedly desiging a 100k vette similar to the z06, but more luxury and over 600 hp. so yes, that cobalt is more than most likely to never even be drawn on paper. :D

Delphi where? Just curious... I work at Delphi in Kokomo, Indiana....
