Backup Lights Don't Work

Anybody had trouble with the backup lights? The strange thing is that in reverse there is 12 volts at both reverse light sockets when both bulbs are out until a bulb is plugged in either one then measured at the other one. It seems like the voltage is there but because it can't take any load the voltage drops off to almost zero. The ground seems OK. Where is the reverse switch located? Is it on the tranny (manual transmission), or is it inside in the shifter console? Does the computer control the backup lights? Maybe it is cutting off the power when the bulb load is detected for some reason.

So many questions. Thanks for your help.

I know this is old but I searched for an answer and found it on another board.
My light were dead too.
58706B0C3F9D33 is the part number for the switch on the transmission. put car in 4th gear look between the fuse box and valve cover you'll see a bundle of wires on the trans push them to the side you'll find the switch. use long extension with a 22mm socket to remove it. switch cost 12.79 for A/C Delco unit.
