If I am understanding correctly; you are downshifting from 3rd to 1st and you are having trouble getting in so you pull up on the lever on the shifter that you would normally pull up for shifting into reverse?

1st - I don't have that lever to pull up for reverse but am sort of familiar with them.

2nd - Are you shifting back into 1st at a speed above 15 mph? A lot of stick shift cars will resist shifting into a lower gear that would start you out into a high RPM. If you really want to be in a lower gear at a higher speed slam it harder and make sure your clutch is all the way to the floor.

That's my advise. Hope that helps. I have not run into this particular problem with my Cobalt but I have a different year and a different trim. Maybe someone else could be of further assistance.

Why would you ever want to put your car into a 1st gear when you are supposed to be in 3rd. Only RWD cars benefit from that ever and that is only for drifting. In this car, it has a safety feature that prevents noob mistakes like that so that way you do not blow your tranny. IF you are going more than 20 mphs, there will be no way to go into 1st gear due to that safety switch. Good luck, learn a little about driving a stick shift car instead of trying it because you will blow your tranny prematurely.

I don't know if you are directing it to me or him but when I am slowing down for a stop sign I will often put it into first at 20-25 or so but not engage it. More so its in place.

Oh and speaking of being new to sticks. When my friend was teaching his girlfriend to drive a stick he told her to "punch your passenger" when shifting into 5th cause she would accidentally shift back into 3rd a lot. :P
