I don't have a dealer problem so much as an annoying driveline clunking problem. This is most pronounced when shifting from 1st to 2nd, but you can hear it in other gears if you listen. If you are super smooth you can engage the gears w/o this noise, but it takes a determined effort.

So is this normal? Do we just live with the clunking noise and learn to love it? I took the issue to my local dealer a couple of weeks ago, and they didn't think it was unusual, and that I should just monitor it!

Is this normal, and what exactly is it that CLUNKS ?

Drivline lash/clunk

Thanks for the comments. I'd read on another forum that some people agree this driveline lash noise is "normal"! I don't think so either. I'm going either back to this dealer or another one and insist on a test drive while I go along.

Took the car into a 2nd dealer and had the rearend/diff mechanic drive it. He said that most all of these front wheel drive Cobalts have a slight lash or noise in the drivetrain when you release the clutch and the gearing responds. He claimed that similar noises occur on many other cars , but you can't hear it as well because of better sound insulations!

I'm still not sure if I believe this. A definite clunking noise on release of the clutch and driveline engagement doesn't seem totally normal to me. I'll admit that the mechanic seemed to be a smoother driver than I am, and the noise was attentuated quite a lot by smoother clutch engagement. I'm still going to have yet another dealer look/listen to it.

It would help if anyone else has or had a similar problem and how/whether it was resolved?

thanks,
cw
