Oil Change, is this normal?

5977 Views 21 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  hitthecones
I just changed my oil in my Cobalt. The problem is that it took 6 qt to make it in the middle normal range on the dipstick of being too full and not full enough. Yes the car was resting for at least 10 minutes and on flat ground. Is it possible the dipstick is wrong or can it really take that much. The owners manual says it takes 5 qt. What should i do?

Just a shade over 6 actually , not quite 6.5
(be cafeful not to over fill it)
Most dealers want to charge you for the full 7 though

Are you shure...i ahve read and read the owners manual and i am 99% sure it calls for 5 qts, i only put 5qts in and mine and it is full <------this is after letting it set for a while and i am in a level garage, and when you jack the car up the oil pan tilts back to the plug, so i am sure it all gets out. I will check and see again tomorrow in the book before we go round and round about how many qts it takes. :D

ok, I will check this thread tommorow then. It might have oil specs for the base cobalts too so make sure it is for the 2.0 engine.
changed my mind........i went and looked b/c it would cause me to loose sleep.........and it says oil change w/ filter 5 qts.....if yours says otherwise please post.

***made sure it was for the 2.0 liter*****
I beleive all of the owners manuals say 6 qts for the LSJ
(I know the FSM does)
<EDIT> But like I said it usually takes a bit more to get the dipstick to show FULL
WopOnTour
going out to get my manual, brb
WTF!!!!!!! I say 5.....clownhair sayd 7........and now you say 6!!!!!!! Someone needs to just post up the page of the owners manul (5-97 capacities and specifications) for everyone to see exactly what it says. I tried to do it but it keeps telling my file is too large, i will try taking a pic with my camera phone.
engine oil with filter-----6.75 quarts

mine is a redline though.

It has the 2.2 as 4 quarts.
I am sitting here lokinat mine and i know i am not blind :) .......I guess there maybe a difference in the redline manual and the ss manual.... wow didnt know this was going to draw so much contoversy! Also it is weird that my LS1 takes 5 or 5.5 qts and it is a v8 and my cobalt is a 4 cyl......it shouldnt need as much ( i guess different engines call for differnet specs, i will post a copy of my owners manual page tomorrow wheni get a digital camera to take a pic. Until then, i will subside into my cave and read and read my owners manual!!!!!!!!!

I believe the 2005 owners manuals were incorect as they don't show different capacities for the L61 and the LSJ. The 2005 FSM (electronic) was updated a while back to correctly show 5qts for the L61 (2.2) and 6 quarts for the LSJ (2.0) due to the extra capacity in the engine oil cooler, (that the L61 doesnt have) Here's the capacities as showning the 2006 Owners manual and FSM.

Application Capacities English Metric

Air Conditioning Refrigerant R134a 0.9 lb 0.41 kg

Cooling System
  • 2.0L L4 Engine Supercharged 7.4 qt 7.0 L
  • 2.2L L4 Engine 6.8 qt 6.5 L
  • 2.4L L4 Engine 7.4 qt 7.0L
Intercooler System 2.0L Engine 2.0 qt 1.9 L

Engine Oil with Filter
  • 2.2L L4 and 2.4L L4 Engines 5.0 qt 4.7 L
  • 2.0L L4 Engine Supercharged 6.0 qt 5.7 L
Fuel Tank 13.0 gal 49.2 L

Transaxle, Automatic (Complete Drain and Refill) 7.0 qt 6.6 L

Transaxle, Manual (Complete Drain and Refill)
2.2L L4 and 2.4L L4 Engines 1.7 qt 1.6 L
  • 2.0L L4 Engine Supercharged 1.6 qt 1.5 L
*All capacities are approximate.
See less See more
mine says 5 qts for oil and there is only one listing (no 2.0, 2.4)
as for the manual trans drain and refill, it calls for *1.8 qts*
and the fuel capacity says 13.5 gals.
