question...

Reading up on these forums and reviews/articles on the SS, it seems most have been trapping in the high 90's (around 98mph seems to be pretty consistant), but run 14's still. I know when I had my mustang, w/ a few mods I ran a 13.68 @ 98mph w/o drag radials w/ a 1.99 60ft. Now granted there are some pretty big differences between the two vehicles, but what is it exactly (powerband? Gear ratio? launch?) that has the SS stuck in the 14's w/ such a high trap speed?

I would say it would have to be the launch, being a FWD car. It does have potential for a LOW 14 sec pass, but 13's... I'm not so sure. I'm not saying it's not possible, I'd love to see a stock one do it.. I'm hoping one will!

Also, it comes on 18 inch wheels. I know it might now slow it down MUCH, but in the quarter mile, every milisec counts!

I'm sure if someone were to put lighter, 17 inch wheels, with some good summer tires, they'd be A LOT closer a 13 second pass, IMHO
If someone could get the launch down, then they would probably have the fasted time with a pretty decent trap speed. The 60 ft's on almost all RL's and SS's I've seen are no better than 2.3 roughly, maybe a 2.2, but not very many at all. Get down the launch into the rest of first gear, and these things will be pretty quick for a 4 banger down the track.
Exactly as said..im trying to explan the MPH thing to some mustang guys right now. Its over their narrowminded heads right now.

FWIW: My stock 1995 Z28 went 14.10 @ 97mph with a 2.1 60ft. I can see a stock cobalt nailing 13.90s with a good launch.
Exactly. 13's are there, but the skill to launch has to get it there.
Theres only one thing to say to this......

Slicks or DR's on 15" rims=13's

I would even say a 13.7 is possible in the right conditions with a real good launch and precise shifting.
I say I just need to hurry up and get one so I can give it a whirl!! LOL
And I think KSE's right on the whole RWD to FWD comparison on the launch, RWD's dig better...
I think the SS has some traction problems right off the line.
But i have seen a Dodge Viper GTS hit 11.9 on the quater with like a 189mph. The Viper spun the tires all the way though the first 3 gears. Then once it got forth it grab and took off. But yeah......

But maybe if some one would put some street slicks on the SS we would see 13's.

189 MPH  maybe 129 or 139!!

I don't see a stock SS of any kind running 13's, slicks, weight reduction, etc.etc. Low 14's I could see.
Theyre light and they have torque, and are damn near the same as an SRT acceleration wise, and I have seen a few of them in the 13.7 range dead stock with just sticky tires. I dont see why the SS couldnt do it with slicks dead stock, no weight reduc ect.

13 second pass potential is there. If I had an SS, I swear I'm confident enough to say I'd nail a 13.999!!!

They got the WHP to do it as well as Torque. When launching however, torque can work against you since it's what makes you spin out!

I swear I'd make into 13's. I SWEAR IT! lol:D

Seriously, I can do it.
Yeah, launching a fwd, high revving 4-cyl is definitely taking me some getting used to. Plus the hydraulic clutch is very VERY different from the ol' cable driven clutch in my stang. Also, scratching 2nd scared the hell out of me, and I haven't done it since....it felt like my whole front end was about break off! I guess that's what wheel hop is eh?

Yeap if you want to get rid of that visit Goffy Guy....http://www.cobaltss.com/forums/showthread.php?t=710

Sorry this is a double post (other is in the vendor section), but does this bolt up the same way on the SS as the Ion?
