Anyone else had problems with their SS motor? Sounded like a diesel at idle making some god aweful noises. Dealer/GM techs think it may be a broken timing chain tensioner. Should find out more today. Dealer discussing with factory before 'digging in' to the motor. Will update.

Ok everyone flame me for being an a-hole if I am wrong but our cars don't have a timing chain.... They have a timing BELT.... Still could be the tensioner though........

There is a chain on the cam gears isn't there? I could've sworn I saw pictures of a chain in the performance build booklet.

That's what I thought as well. Found out what went wrong either way. The tensioner is evidently 'spring' loaded and loosens when needed. Well, this one loosened and never came back. GM tech's said this is a problem on regular Cobalt engines but had not been seen on the SS engine to date, until today.

So did it hurt anything?????????

Chain driven dohc engine, no timing belt. All eco techs have chain driven cams. :D

Dang I apologize and promise next time to just shut up!! You guys were right of course.... This is from GM's performance book..


"The ECOTEC twin-cam cylinder head uses low-friction
hydraulic roller finger-followers, which have been proven
reliable and effective up to 11,000 rpm. Head fastener
placement permits cylinder head removal and installation
without removing the camshafts. The camshafts are driven
directly off the crank by a chain.
The design includes
provisions for future upgrading to variable cam phasing. The
finger-follower design permits a light-weight narrow profile
and reduced valve angles(the intake valve is 18 degrees
from vertical and the exhaust valve 16 degrees)."

They said nothing hurt other than the tensioner. Of course nothing in stock and had to order so no car until next week.
