... in every gear in the cobalt ss? Cuase I've heard that the SS can go 70(ish) in 2nd. My REDLINE only goes 60 in 2nd, and I can't believe that they are geared that different.

hello? anybody out there? I'm sure someone has taken their CSS to redline a couple of times?!!!
I don't take mine to redline, I see no use in it. When I push it hard I shift around 6k and I beleive I was around 65 or so there but I could be wrong. I don't really watch the speed till I'm in 4th lol
it hits right at 140ish in fourth.. it was a bit too fast so i slowed down when i shifted to fifth.... on a track of course....
WOW!!! 140 in 4th, huh?!! My REDLINE only does 120. I guess they are geared a little different. thanks for the info
No, they are geared the same, a lot of it has to do with load, wind speed/direction, and other weather conditions. :)

i think you are wrong
"140ish"... Yea, with a 55 mph tail wind. Ha, 140ish.
You know what guys? I was just out checking the gear ratios from various websites for both cars and found the do get the same gear ratios. So, I got to thinkin and it just hit me like a ton of bricks..... the CSS has 18's while my redline only has 17's!!!
like, duh!!!
Don't the SS and R/L have totally diferent transmissions?? At least that is what i read somewhere...
They have the same tranny no difference at all.

actually it was about that fast, i know it was over 130 before the limiter kicked in for sure i still think it was right under 140 though, that was the sole reason that by the time i got back to the dealer i knew i was going home with it.
ok, just did some investigating, the cars have identical tranny gears and fd ratios--->

1 3.380:1
2 1.760:1
3 1.180:1
4 0.890:1
5 0.700:1
Final drive: 4.050:1

but calculating in the factors of factory tire/wheel size of (redline: 215/45/17) compared to (cobalt: 215/45/18) since they are on the same gearing there will be an approximate difference of 2.4 mph per 60mph increment. <this is because the cobalt's got about a 3.2 inch circumference advantage> add that up and for us to hit 135 in fourth would be your car topping out at 128~mph

in a few weeks after my car is totally broke in i'll get a short video of it. for right now, as hard as it is, i'm taking it easy on the car lol
one other question i had for someone... if the redlines and cobalts weigh about the same and have the same drivetrain, why the hell is the 0-60 time so much better with the cobalt? does it just have more gerbils under the hood or something?

I found this regarding the SS (not sure about R/L) on http://www.rsportscars.com/eng/articles/cobalt_ss_preview.asp

And what about the performance? According to Chevrolet Cobalt marketing manager Jeff Haag, the SS Supercharged does 0-60 mph in 6.4 seconds and runs the quarter mile in an impressive 14.9 seconds. What’s more, Haag says the SS Supercharged isn’t required to have a speed limiter because the car comes equipped with Z-rated tires, allowing a top speed of 143 mph.
appearently there have not been any real-world tests of this stuff that are advertised. i'm sure we will have the info before long
well i just found a tranny calculator online and these are the top speeds for those setups:

1st: 38mph

2nd: 72mph

3rd: 108mph

4th: 143mph

5th: 182mph

so you can see there's something funny about that calculation and the advertised top speed of the cobalt. i still think it'll go faster cause i hit that fast and hit the brakes after i seen how fast i was actually going.

It isnt it just depends on the driver unless the bigger wheels are grabing better.Of course with goofyguys brace wheel hop is virtually gone....just smokin tires.
